The Joy of Encouragement

We can be encouraged by what we hear-
Words are powerful; of this we are aware.
But nobody cares how much you know,
until they know how much you care.

It’s wonderous what a hug can do-
A hug can cheer you when you’re blue.
A hug can say, “I love you so”,
or “I sure hate to see you go”.

A hug is, “Welcome back again”-
and “Great to see you, where’ve you been?”
A hug can smoothe a small child’s pain,
and bring a rainbow after rain.

The hug- there’s no doubt about it,
We scarcely could survive without it.
A hug delights, and warms and charms-
It must be why God gave us arms.

Hugs are great for fathers and mothers,
Sweet for sisters, swell for brothers.
Kittens crave them; puppies love them.
and politicians are not above them.

No need to fret about your store of them-
The more you give, the more there’s more of them.
So stretch those arms without delay,
and give someone a hug today!

The message of this poem is “encouragement”-
When we touch someone with the love of God,
It fills a void;
That is my intent.

We are to encourage one another.
I know that I am encouraged by what I sense,
by what I hear, by what I read.
Reach out and touch someone-
Sense the hunger, sense the need.

Footnote: Learn to build up, not beat up.
The command to encourage one another is found
five times in the New Testament. It’s addressed
to all believers. It is not conditional, it is not optional.
It is a command.

Slaying the Giants in Your Life~Destroying Discouragement

Can you recognize the enemy?
There’s a battle to be won.
Know who you are fighting-
Your armor is the Son!

There are three ways to live,
Of this there is no doubt:
You can live out-
You can wear out, or
You can burn out!

It is erroneous to say
“working too hard is burnout”-
Working hard “at the right thing”
is what it is all about.

Bring everything out of that “anxiety closet”,
and expose it to the ” Light”-
When looked at as they truly are,
You can put them all to flight!

Emotions are treacherous advisors.
We need to be disciplined to stay on track.
Work can be wonderful therapy;
It will get your confidence back!

The Biblical story of David
can turn your life around.
Get your slingshot ready,
“Discouragement, you are going DOWN”.

Psalm 46:1-3
God is our refuge and strength. A very present help in trouble, Therefore, we will not fear. Though the earth be removed, and though the mountains be carried into the midst of the sea; Though its waters roar and be troubled, Though the mountains shake with its swelling.

Let it Go

What is it that’s bothering you?
Something you should have done,
but failed to do?

Or-

You forgave someone
when they didn’t seem to care?
Perhaps of the pain you felt at the time
they were totally unaware.

If we harbor our resentments,
we can cause an internal traffic jam.
Be kind to yourself and “let it go”-
Say “That’s just not who I am”.

Don’t be like the old man with bended head,
carrying a bag of feathers that he thinks is lead.
Take it to the Lord in prayer-
He is faithful, and He does care.

“I will be your helper, says the Lord, even He who takes up your cause”. Isaiah 41:4

“I sought the Lord and He heard me, and delivered me from all my fears.” Psalm 34:4

Where Are They Now

A young man walking through a cemetery came across this epitaph written on a tombstone:

“Pause, stranger, when you pass me by-
As you are now, so once was I.
As I am now, so you will be-
Prepare yourself to follow me.”

His reply: “To follow you, I’m not content-
Until I know which way you went!”

If you want to follow someone,
follow Christ, my friend.
He will lead you into paths of righteousness,
and His mercy has no end.

What we think about heaven
determines how we live today.
We can easily be led away from God’s purposes-
if we do not steadfastly pursue His way.

When things go wrong, as they often do-
How do you respond-
Do you pray it through?

It may depend on your expectancy,
Did you implore the Lord
your need to see?

Patience, dear friend,
the Lord knows our needs before we even ask Him.
He will supply those needs no matter how stark or grim.”

For the grace of God that brings salvation has appeared to all men, teaching us that denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly,
righteously, and godly in the present age, looking for
the blessed hope and glorious appearing of our great God and Savior Jesus Christ.”
Titus 2:11-13

Word Association

Is there a secret to having a good memory?
If there is, won’t you share?

As a military wife, I found myself always
in a social setting-
meeting new people everywhere.

I tried “word association”
where you picture things in your mind.
For instance, when I met a Mrs. Finnifrock.
I pictured a dress with a fish tail on the back-
truly one of a kind.

SO, what did I call her when we met again?
All I remembered was the fish tail!
Instead of “Mrs. Finnifrock “
“Mrs. FISHBACK” was my anxious wail!

P S. “There” seems to be the most common name
We hear it everywhere-
When memory fails, and the name won’t come,
We cheerfully exclaim, “HELLO.There!”

A Young Woman in An Old Body

The young woman in me
keeps knocking on my memory.
“I don’t like what’s happening to you-
Remember what you USED to do?
Your transportation was a two-wheel bike-
until you reached “21”
and no longer had to hike

And your first car was a convertible-
very “sporty” for an adventurous girl!
But you have to accept reality-
tho young at heart,
your body’s not free.

You used to be 5’8
and 120 was your weight-
Now you’ve shrunk to 5′ 2
and you can’t stop what’s happening to you.”

“I refuse to be captive by a calendar page-
I’ll let my mind select my present age..
“Twenty one?” “No, that’s not realistic!”
Tho my experiences reflect my zeal,
Dear Lord, to be completely honest,
A “rocking chair” has great appeal”.

Before and After War

Before Daddy went away to war

He worked in a tomato plant.

Working hard, that’s what dads are for.

He didn’t rave and he didn’t rant.

When Dad got home, he laid down to rest

I sat on the end of the couch each night

To us that part of the day was best.

I stroked his hair, I did it right.

But while he was away at war

He got hurt inside, I guess

He was different, bruised and sore.

And he doesn’t lay on the couch anymore.

I’d still like to stroke his hair,

And make him feel all better.

But I guess that I can’t help him

He’s now an old war vetter.

Angelic Rescue

When something happens that is unexplainable,
and excites our inner core-
It leaves you with a sense of awe,
and the desire to know more.

God tells us that “He will put His holy angels
in charge of us, to keep us in all our ways”-
At the time we are being challenged, though- negative thoughts create a haze.

I was driving home alone one night,
not late, but it was dark.
To avoid a lot of traffic I took a back road
where activity was stark.

I have driven this path many times,
But always during the day.
“As fate would have it, I missed my turn
but continued on my way.

It was a dark night, but street lights were few-
Suddenly I was filled with dread!
The road seemed to come to an end, and
dense woods were straight ahead.

“Dear Lord, I need your help,
I don’t know what to do.
There seems to be a ditch on either side,
and trees ahead obstruct my view.”

Two bright lights appeared ,
as a truck came into sight-
“Out of the woods, at this hour?
Lord, your Angel saved the night!

An angel? Yes, I have no doubt.
What other reason could there be
By His bright lights, I turned around
and continued on home safely

I was going to follow the truck a ways,
but it disappeared from sight.
Mission accomplished!!
An angel truly saved the night!

Psalm 34:4 “I sought the Lord, and He answered me
and delivered me from all my fears”.

Friendship

Why do we seem drawn to certain people?
Isn’t it difficult to explain?
The chemistry is different-
but the bonding is the same.

We are God’s creation-
I know He had a plan..
With His Holy Spirit
He relates Himself to man.

He guides us in a mysterious way-
He truly knows what’s best.
Sometimes we blunder through and wonder,
“Lord, is this a test?”

God truly wants the best for us-
The battle has already been won.
All the Lord is endeavoring to do
Is conform us to the image of His Son.

When we meet a fellow Christian,
There is a meeting of the heart.
There is an immediate “bonding”-
A fellowship set apart.

If you have yet to meet our Savior-
Don’t waste another minute
Open up your heart to Him
and ask Him to come in it!

P.S. In your Golden Chain of Friendship,
Will you please count me a link?

The answer is in our attitude-
is how we view our life.
Do you let small things bother you?
That only leads to strife!
The proof is "in the pudding".
It doesn't happen overnight.
I, too, let things bother me-
That's why my hair is white!
Why did it take so long, Lord,
to recognize the need?
The Bible has the answers.
It is Your Word we need to read.
We all treasure love letters-
Their words we hide in our heart.
The Bible is God's love letter to us.
From His love He will never depart!

Deuteronomy 4:31 “For the Lord, thy God, is a merciful God. He will not forsake thee nor destroy thee.”

1 Chronicles 28:20 “And David said to Solomon, his son, Be strong and of good courage, and do it.Fear not, nor be dismayed, for the Lord God, even my God will be with thee; He will not fail thee, nor forsake thee until thou hast finished all the work for the service of the house of the Lord.”

Hebrews 13:5 “Let your manner of life be without covetousness, and be content with such things as ye have, for He hath said, I will never leave you or forsake you.”

P.S.  God honors His word even above His name.
