Measure Your Words

19 Jul

From the Heart

Louise Gibson

Reblogged from January 27, 2017 and even more relevant today.

Years ago an anonymous writer penned a short
poem about the merit of measuring our words:

“A wise old owl sat in an oak.
The more he saw the less he spoke.
The less he spoke the more he heard.
“Why can’t we all be like that wise old bird?”

There is a connection between wisdom
and limiting what we say.
It is wise to be a good listener
while holding our tongue at bay.

Be sensitive to the needs of the one
you are speaking to.
Listen to what their heart is saying
before expressing your point of view.

Wisdom from above:

“Although there is a time to be quiet
and a time to speak (Eccl.3:7)
choosing to speak less allows us
to hear more.”

Psalm 19:14
Let the words of my mouth,
and the meditations of my heart,
be acceptable in Thy sight.
Oh Lord, my strength and my redeemer.

Psalm 96
Shout to the Lord
(If you are depressed you need to read the Psalms.)

Psalm 119
“Forever, oh Lord, your word is settled in Heaven.

Postpone Your Procrastination

Our days are so uncertain,
we don’t know what tomorrow will hold.
Today is the tomorrow that we
thought about yesterday.
How did your plans unfold?

Have you ever wished you could have yesterday back?
Or a tiny piece to re-live?
Are there things unsaid that you wish had been spoken.
or things held back – still to give?

Lord, help us to do our best each day.
It needn’t be worthy of praise.
A warm smile, or an offer to help
never fails to brighten our days.

What Matters to You

Compassion and love are what matters
Reach out to a needy soul.
There is such a hunger for recognition
Make communication your goal.

People need people.
Listen with your heart to this plea.
“I don’t want to walk alone.”
There is such comfort in company.

Every day is a blessing
that comes from our Lord above.
Walk with a grateful spirit.
Do all things in the spirit of love.

I recognize that bad things happen,
Most of which we cannot comprehend.
But then, we are not made to understand it.
Try to be an optimist to the end.

When you accept the things you cannot change
You will dwell on things worthwhile.
Put on a happy face –
You are never fully dressed until you smile.

Food for Thought:
“When God pushes you to the edge, trust Him fully,
because only two things can happen.
Either He will catch you when you fall
or He will teach you how to fly.” Unknown

Pruning

Our life is so fleeting-
Where did the years go?
It seems like only yesterday
my heart was all aglow.

I looked forward to my future,
Optimism was foremost in my mind.
I never had been threatened.
I felt love for all mankind.

So naive in my thinking,
Ignorant of things above.
It took the pruning by the Master’s hand
that I might know true love.

We’ve all heard of pruning.
Gardening books recommend it, too.
Not to be hateful, but sometimes
simply the right thing to do.

Say, you’ve forgotten to prune your impatiens,
and now they’re simply towers-
No problem. Just take some clippers
and “lop off their heads”-
You’ll wind up with more flowers!

I have learned to walk by faith, not sight-
It is the Master Gardener that transforms
darkness into light.

What a Bargain!

God has not promised skies always blue,
But on His faithfulness you can depend.
He said He will never leave or forsake you.
His mercy has no end.

When your load is heavy
and you are feeling blue-
Look to Jesus, my friend.
There is help for you.

Jesus is waiting with a father’s love
His help and strength to give.
You have only to call on Him-
You will truly start to live!

Jesus said, “My peace I give to you”.
That is a perfect peace.
What a bargain. We give Him our burden.
He blesses as we release.

Surely There’s an Easier Way

Before I was afflicted
I did go astray,
but God wanted my attention
to walk in His way!

God gets our attention
through suffering and pain.
To be His obedient servant
is truly great gain!

I now have a more teachable spirit,
but it came at a price.
Remember your dad’s admonition?
“I’m not going to tell you twice”!

Thank you, Lord, for your patience.
It takes awhile to learn your way.
Help us to keep our eyes on you, Lord,
As we strive to be obedient each day.

Window Wonders

My kitchen window overlooks my patio.
It affords me an excellent view.
I observe the antics of my animal friends
while cooking, perhaps a stew.

My window wonders this week
have become a bit disturbing.
What used to be a heartwarming scene
has become very disconcerting.

I have a most unusual guest
who really is quite rude.
He appears uninvited at meal time
and devours all the food.

Lord, I need your help-
I really don’t want to be mean.
But that cute raccoon is gaining weight,
while my cats are looking lean.

I said he is cute because
his habits are disarming-
He picks up his food with his “hands”-
I must confess he is charming!

I take out fresh water for my cats,
but our visitor is quite pristine!
You see, he “washes” his food in it-
He is the original “Mr. Clean”.

And Lord, you see the other problem, too, I know-
How he trashes up my patio?
I get so tired of using my broom,
I moved the garbage can to the utility room.

Lord, I have a question, please-
“Was this your plan from the start,
to put me “under pressure”
to tenderize my heart?”

Write Your Own Positive Quote About Growing Older

The age I am is a welcome friend-

It is so patient, no rush to the end.

One day at a time is sufficient for me
to glean the promises of God eternally.

I want so much to continue to grow-
It is Christ, my Savior, I want to know.

Age is a gift from our Lord above.
Treasure the memories of His infinite love.

One rule I have made as I age.
“Don’t let your life be ruled by a calendar page”.

P.S. As long as God gives you life,
LIVE it!

Celebrating Knowledge

Do you know why I think it is essential to learn something new?
Or why I try to glean new insights from observing what you do?

You generously share your thoughts with me,
‘ tho you might not be aware.
I listen carefully to your actions.
There is wisdom and insight there.

To learn something new each day,
listen with your heart.
There is a message in our actions
that words fail to impart.

Actions speak louder than words.
Body language can be strong.
Watch carefully before you judge someone.
Keep in mind, you may be wrong.

Thought for the Day

Tomorrow is a promissory note.
Today is the only cash you have.

You Can Be Alone- Without Feeling Lonely

People need people-
It’s embedded in our soul.
But to be contented when by yourself
Is a God-given role.

” My peace I give to you”,
proclaims the Lord of Glory”.
Christ is our sufficiency.
It’s an oft-repeated story.

Christ advises, “To have friends,
show yourself friendly.”
Who can resist a smile?
And look at the person straight in the eye.
It will be worth your while.
