What Cats Can Do for You

Dogs are said to be “Man’s best friend”

To their owner that may be true-

But please allow me to list some things

That a cat can do for you..

Yes, I am a cat lover-

I grew up with them, you see-

Never allowed to have a dog,

Cats gravitated to me.

Cats warm your lap, and

Give you someone to talk to-

They help reduce your blood pressure

As they communicate with you.

Cats are so easy to entertain-

They can turn a bottle cap into a toy.

They display daring acrobatic feats

That turn “hum drum” into joy.

Cats make you more aware of birds.

I used to have so many-

But since the Lord sent those cats-

I find I don’t have ANY!

Cats teach you how to “land on your feet”-

And how to “lick your wounds and go on”.

They contribute to living a longer life-

As your affection they try to “con”.

They remind us that life is mysterious-

They share the “all is well” purring with you.

They make an old worn couch look beautiful!

You can see why I love cats- can’t you!

Like a “thief in the night

You stalked your prey

You watched my “goings”in and  out

You hid behind the tree all day

It was my heart you were searching out!

You were abandoned, hungry, and frightened,

Always anxious by day.

You were left at the home of the “Cat Lady”.

Would you be welcomed,

Or turned away?

” You don’t know the heart

Of the “Cat Lady”, little friend-

You were welcomed the moment

She looked into your eyes

And saw the need that has no end-

It’s called “love!”

CHARLEY’S ANGELS

You have heard of “Charley’s Angels”,

But these are quite unique!–

They were born during Hurricane Charley

When the winds were at their peak

They were the start of my WindowWonders

Their appearance was a shock to my eyes.

One by one they came out of our shed-

Their appearance was a disturbing surprise!

I had such mixed emotions-

“Lord, is this really true?

You know my husband doesn’t like cats-

What am I to do?”

The Lord doesn’t make mistakes-

Our future is foreseen

He sent the cats for me to love-

Definitely not to be mean.

“Big Momma” is a disciplinarian,

Who rules her kids with her paw-

But, conversely so, her affection

Has filled my heart with awe!

They truly are a family,

Bonded in loyalty-

Their protection of one another

Is a sight worthy to see.

It took awhile to name them-

Personalities came into play

“Big Momma”, “Ginger”, “Pepper” and “Tinkerbell

Bonded in every way.

“Corky” and “Angel” two black and whites

Live indoors with me-

Their presence is truly heartwarming-

Their antics a joy to see.

Have you ever had a “furry friend”

That truly communicated with you-

With tender eyes that seemed to say,

“Thank you, I love you, too”?

I don’t look forward to hurricanes-

They fill me with fear and dread-

But “Charley” truly was a blessing

Intended to bring comfort, instead!

Window Wonders~Disturbing and Disconcerting

 My window wonders this week

Have become a bit disturbing.

What used to be a heartwarming scene

Has become very disconcerting!

I have a most unusual guest,

Who really is quite rude.

He appears uninvited at meal time

And devours all the food!

Lord, I need your help.

I really don’t want to be mean.

But that cute raccoon is gaining weight,

While my cats are looking lean.

I said he is “cute” because

His habits are disarming.

He picks his food up with his “hands”-

I must confess he is charming!

I take out fresh water for my cats,

But our visitor is quite pristine!

You see, he “washes” his food in it.

He is the original “Mr. Clean”.

And Lord, you see the other problem, too, I know.

How he trashes up my patio?

I get so tired of using my broom,

I moved the garbage can to the utility room.

Lord, I have a question, please

Was this your plan from the start,

To  put me “under pressure”

To tenderize my heart?

There’s a Squirrel in the House!

Sunday Memories

Judy Willis

I love to watch squirrels.  They are such fun to see – digging in the grass for buried treasures; chasing each other around the tree; sitting on their haunches, tail up and curled, eating some delightful morsel….

For some time, I had been feeding pecans to the squirrels in the back yard.  I would stand in the doorway and place the pecan closer and closer to my foot, just to see how close they would come to me.

Why is the dog, Maxie, running through the house?  Is she chasing something?  Then why isn’t she barking?  As I looked down over the bannister….who/what belonged to that gray tail?  Then I understood, and….FRED!  THERE’S A SQUIRREL IN THE HOUSE!!

As Fred ran to get a broom, I ran down the stairs and grabbed Maxie.  I took her to the front door and opened it and the screen door.  I crouched down, holding her wiggling body by her collar, next to me.  Fred ran into the living room.  Then I heard him scream a word that I had never heard him say before!

Next thing I know, the squirrel is racing for the open door.  And I just let go of Maxie and let her chase that squirrel to her heart’s content!  She didn’t catch it, of course, but not for lack of trying.

Seems the squirrel had jumped up on top of one of the picture frames over the couch.  As Fred swung the broom at it – it jumped at his face!  Hence the “word.”  But he was after that squirrel as fast as possible.

From then on, any time Maxie saw a squirrel outside the house, she went crazy, trying to get to it.  She never barked, but boy! did she race back and forth in front of the windows.

I shall never feed a pecan to a squirrel again!

  A Slice of Life

 Bill Lites

We have two cats at our house, one Calico, named Lily, and a grey and white striped, Jasmine. It’s funny how different two cats can be.  Lily is the princess.  She is beautiful and she knows it.

Her fur is soft and silky, she purrs easily, and she loves to be picked up by my wife and carried around the house while my wife lets her look at the various things on the bookshelves and counters.  When her humans are not entertaining her, she bakes herself in a sunbeam coming through the window or on the screened porch.  But, she is very demanding and skittish and does a lot of meowing to tell us it’s time for her food, time for her brushing or that things are too loud and scary.  But, we really do love her and all her princess ways.

Now Jasmine is another story.  She is the feisty one.  She is always trying to get Lily to play with her, but to no avail.  So, she plays by herself most of the time.  We have discovered, after buying all kinds of cat toys, that what she likes to play with most is one of those little round plastic pull-top seals from a milk carton.  She will bat and chase one of those things around the house like a one cat soccer player, and when she does, we say she’s playing “Kitty Soccer.”  She also has one tiny toy mouse that she likes, we guess, because it has something loose inside it and rattles when she bats it around.

Jasmine likes to be with my wife all the time, and follows her around the house wherever she goes. If my wife is in one room, with the door closed, Jasmine wants the door opened so she can be in that room.  If Jasmine is in the house and my wife is on our screened porch, with the door closed, Jasmine wants the door opened so she can be on the porch too.  Now if Jasmine happens to be on the porch and wants in, and nobody opens the door in a timely manner, she has this habit of jumping up on the French door and clinging onto one of the wooden glass pane supports to get our attention.  It is quiet a sight, and a real attraction when we have guests.

So, we have gone to calling Jasmine our “In-And-Out-Cat.”  When the weather is nice and we have left the door open, Jasmine will sit in the opening, guarding the opening, and won’t let Lily in or out until she is ready to move.  We are not sure what that is all about, but it makes for some interesting cat stand-offs.  All her pranks and insistence just make us love Jasmine more.

Variety is the spice of life, they say. When it comes to cats it’s the truth, make no mistake about it.
