Being a Bird

Mockingbird

Mockingbird sings every day

Crown the tree to have his say

Lifts in joy and gathers song

Doesn’t know the world’s all wrong.

Quail

Father quail comes through the fence

Finding seed means no offense

Calls a song to bustling chicks

Bob-white, Bob-white, a happy mix.

Cardinal

Peach brown cardinal looks to see

Where her beloved one must be

When she finds him happy, all

Spring, summer, winter, fall.

DiVoran has been writing for most of her life. Her first attempt at a story was when she was seven years old and her mother got a new typewriter. DiVoran got to use it and when her dad saw her writing he asked what she was writing about. DiVoran answered that she was writing the story of her life. Her dad’s only comment was, “Well, it’s going to be a very short story.” After most of a lifetime of writing and helping other writers, DiVoran finally launched her own dream which was to write a novel of her own. She now has her Florida Springs trilogy and her novel, a Christian Western Romance, Go West available on Amazon. When speaking about her road to publication, she gives thanks to the Lord for all the people who helped her grow and learn.  She says, “I could never have done it by myself, but when I got going everything fell beautifully into place, and I was glad I had started on my dream.”

River Dawn

By Dora Jane Bedell Bowers

God is Love; God is light,

He protects us through the night.

He turns morn to birds in flight,

To restore a lovely sight.

When the morning sun begins,

Then the sound of violins

And the joy of mandolins

God forgiving all our sins

Now the day has just begun

Birds make circles one by one

Underneath a morning sun

Flying birds forever-fun

Silently the morning flight,

Follows from the windy night

First, the Pelican’s delight

Scooping fish, oh, what a sight.

How slowly moves the morning air

As the golden sun shines fair

And Holy Spirit always there

He is here and everywhere

Swirling clouds and sunny blaze

Making headwinds to amaze

Needing glasses to appraise

Like the sun, so go the days

Watching now as pictures dawn

Beneath a tree, a resting fawn

When the darkness comes withdrawn

I’m ready for another yawn

Sea Gulls float on salty-sea

Blackbirds fill the sky to flee

Flying birds all comfort be

Wing-ed joy entrancing me

Now the dawn has changed its mind

Clouds oppress, the light is blind,

Colors muted, birds are still,

Back to bed, don’t catch a chill.

On the Porch

Onisha Ellis

I came across this poem in Streams in the Desert during my morning meditation. I’ve often been amazed at technology’s ability to fling beauty through the air. In truth, I find it easier to trust that my living God hears prayers than that machines can send sound across through the air.

If radio’s slim finger can pluck a melody

From night, and toss it over a continent or sea;

If the petaled white notes of a violin

Are blown across a mountain or a city’s din;

If songs, like crimson roses, are culled from thin blue air—

Why should mortals wonder if God hears prayer?

If ever I wanted to loosen my tongue-
And speak out to those who are young,
It is now.

Please be patient.
Don’t give up in despair.
Our Lord has a plan for your life.
Trust He is always there.

Keep looking up –
God wants the best for you.
Follow your dream
And trust that it will come true!

From the Heart

It is not how long you have lived-
Nor how long you have left.
It is how much life you have packed into those years
So you are not feeling bereft.

Living is loving-
You can’t separate the two.
Loving is not conditional-
That’s how God created you.

Love is sincere-
It begins in your heart.
It is the fruit of the spirit.
He promises never to depart.

Love truly can’t be explained.
It is best shown in action.
Sacrifice yourself for the good of others.
Sincerity is a heartfelt attraction.

We are being transformed by our Creator
What an example He set for you and me.
Love in action, caring for others
prepares us for Eternity.

Animal Attraction

Sonya likes the furry pets,

But her brother is away,

So she cares for lizards,

Feeds and waters them each day.

Her brother has a snake, too.

She feeds him two live mice.

She thought she wouldn’t do it,

But she only thought it twice.

The furry ones are furry,

The cat and ferret too.

She has a tiny hamster

It’s called a berry blue.

She writes her brother often

And sends money for the phone.

She doesn’t want her bro to feel

As if he’s all alone.
