SUNDAY MEMORIES

JUDY

Recently, we met a friend at a famous barbeque eatery. It has become one of our favorite places to eat. Unfortunately, it takes us about 45 minutes to get there from our house, so we don’t go there very often. It is a favorite of the locals, and you must get there just as they open the doors, or you wait in a long line outside!

It’s a fairly rustic place, with just a few booths, but mostly picnic-type tables with benches. Some of the seating is outside, but under cover. But the food is really worth the wait, and definitely the place to go if you like BBQ.

While we were eating and visiting with each other, I noticed a plaque on the wall. There are a LOT of plaques on the wall, and other rustic decorations, but this one really caught my eye. It goes like this:

smilr copy

Isn’t that neat? There really isn’t anything “Christian” about it, but I think it says a lot about life perspective. I think it would help keep us in the right frame of mind to be upbeat and positive about how we live each day. Nothing droopy about anything on that list.

So………S M I L E and give thanks – for everything!

God is good.

The Secret to Happiness

4 Apr

From My Heart

Louise Gibson

author of Window Wonders;

We all harbor secrets
(facts set apart)
But I am compelled to share my secret –
It is a grateful heart.

Life presents many challenges –
We agree that this is true.
From birth to the grave circumstances change
And so does our point of view.

I am family oriented.
It was so important to me.
To raise and nurture children with love –
Became my top priority.

It took the death of my first born son
To draw my eyes to the cross.
The Lord didn’t do it to be mean –
Rather, He put meaning to my loss.

God didn’t ask us to understand him.
He only said, “trust and obey.”
I am so grateful for His promises.
He is “the truth, the light, the way.”

Footnote:
“For I know the thoughts that I think toward you” says the Lord.
“Thoughts of peace and not of evil, to give you a Future and a Hope.”

Heaping Coals of Fire

My Take

DiVoran Lites

Author, Poet and ArtistAs I write, my soup heats on the stove. A banner blows from the porch over bright red poinsettias in sunshine. A shiny whirly-gig spins on the back fence. Red tallow tree leaves flutter in the breeze. I’ve had two days of being down with a cold, but today I’m feeling myself again and everything looks better and brighter.

I just had a rest listening to Dino’s incredible piano hymns on my new Pandora radio station coming from Bill’s iPhone. The cat lay on my chest purring the whole time.

Before that Bill and I cleaned house so it would be fur-free when, tomorrow, one of our grown children’s friends brings his family for a rare visit. They live in the Atlanta area and we live in Florida, so we don’t see them often, but we do talk on the phone.

Bill vacuumed and I dusted. It was cool on the porch, but not too cold to water the plants and run a dust rag over the shelf where we keep them. Oh, yes, some hot-pink Christmas cactus is in bloom there, too. I filled the birdbath and the painted buntings came to bathe, to drink, and to eat the seed Bill put out for them.

As I was lying down to rest, just before the cat got comfortable, while the music was playing softly, Bill brought in a vintage book he’s reading: Strange Scriptures. It was written by a missionary by the name of Barbara M. Bowen who lived in Palestine and published her book with Wm. B. Eerdman in 1945. It explains many of the things we read in the Bible by telling how the people of Bible lands have lived since the days of Abraham.

He read about coals of fire, Romans 12:20. Mrs. Bowen explained that where she and her husband lived people kept a brazier of fire going in their homes at all times. If the coals went out they sent someone to a neighbor’s house for fresh ones. If the neighbor was loving and generous she filled the container for the coals full and it was carried on the head back to the fireless home. Paul said that if we give our enemies food and drink, we are heaping coals of fire on their heads. In that day and time it meant to forgive fully and generously. Such love and forgiveness can only be experienced through the Spirit of God and those who love and trust Him.

It had been one year since Bill’s heart attack. As he read to me, he had his ball cap on, ready to run an errand. My bed was the right mix of firm and soft. The house was neither too warm nor too cold. Our work was done, our house was clean. The radio played softly, “It is Well with My Soul,” and it truly was well with our souls. Sometimes such moments arrive and we treasure them fleetingly. I wanted to share this one with you and wish you a New Year full of them.

How Can I Celebrate Thanksgiving

23 Nov

Walking by Faith, Not by Sight

Janet Perez Eckles

“Quick, Honey,” I said, “get your shoes in the closet, and make sure the remote controls aren’t all over the place.”

The videographer from a local TV network affiliate was about to arrive. And the clips were to be used as part of my intro as I keynoted an event. So I dashed around to and fro making sure the house was pretty tidy.

Crazy isn’t it? Why don’t I worry about taking a moment to take a deep breath and say thank you—thank you, Lord for the opportunity, for the exposure, for the way you guide the ministry. And how about worrying about cleaning my heart, my attitude, my habits and complaining tendencies instead?

That should be my priority as God doesn’t need a video camera. He’s already there sitting on the sofa of my heart. He’s observing where I put my faith. Where I tucked my trust. And how much joy I stored in this life of mine. I made a decision—to truly celebrate thanksgiving by making sure my heart is clean and adorned with gratitude…

“For the eyes of the Lord run to and fro throughout the whole earth, to show himself strong in the behalf of them whose heart is perfect toward him (II Chronicles 16:9).

Father, even though my life isn’t perfect, my flaws are evident, my weaknesses real, help me to have a heart that is lined with genuine appreciation for what you granted me and a heart that is perfectly clean for you. In Jesus’ name, amen.

• What are you grateful for today?

• What will you do to make the needed change in your attitude?

• What will you do to show gratitude?

Book Blast: A Life of Gratitude: 21 Days to Overcoming Self-Pity and Negativity by Shelley Hitz {3/20/13} – $25 Amazon Gift Card Giveaway

Title: A Life of Gratitude: 21 Days to Overcoming Self-Pity and Negativity

By Shelley Hitz

About the Book:

During a season of transition in my life, I found myself overwhelmed with negative emotions like self-pity and a complaining spirit. It was as if a dark cloud had descended over me. I prayed and asked God for wisdom on how to overcome these negative emotions. As I did, I sensed Him leading me to do a 21 day gratitude challenge.

Over the course of the 21 days, God began to change me as I spent intentional time being grateful for all I had been given. I did this through writing in my journal each day and also sending a hand-written thank you note to someone different each day. This also led me to writing out 21 prayers of gratitude and compiling 21 stories of gratitude.

I want to share what I learned with you in the pages of this book which includes:

21 Days of Gratitude Challenge

21 Prayers of Gratitude

21 Stories of Gratitude

What to Expect On Each Day:

Read my personal stories, struggles and reflections.

Read one scripture and one quote about gratitude.

Apply one personal application step from the challenge.

Read one prayer of gratitude

Read one story of gratitude

Get Accountability and Encouragement

Along with the 21 day challenge, I also started a private Facebook group to provide accountability and encouragement for myself but also for others who decide to join me in the challenge. You will get access to this group as well. It has been amazing to see God at work in each of our lives.

Will you join me on this journey to gratitude?

Treasure Day

4 Feb

My Take

DiVoran Lites

DiVoran Lites

This morning I spent some time journaling and reading and it got the day off to a magnificent start. The first thing I experienced was the uncondintional love of the Lord. Guess what? He loved you that way too, believe it or not. I had fun drawing a picture of a treasure chest and using glitter in for the gold. Breakfast was delicious even thoug it was the same breakfast I have every day with few exceptions. I had some errands to run and Bill was feeling antsy so he said he’d chauffer me. Here’s what made the day a treasure:

  1. Took a check to the high-school library for a friend who wanted to pay fines and cost of book for a student she doesn’t even know. Fines waived, book inexpensive. Student saved. It was a fluke thing. The student is good about returning books, but this one was lost and gone forever and she didn’t have the money to pay for it so she was no longer allowed to check books out of the high school library.
  2. Stopped at the office supply for a dozen black Pentel Pilot pens, x fine. I know I said I wasn’t going to buy any more pens, but these are my special ones that make thoughts flow.
  3.  Went to the big store for dusting powder just like our daughter bought for her mother-in-law whom she bathes twice a week. Haven’t had any dusting powder for decades. I was looking for the one that was lavender scented, in a beautiful round box, with a puff for under two dollars. We asked the associates, but they couldn’t find it. Bill could. We showed the associate and got a nice little story about how her grandmother insisted she and the other children always use the powder after a shower to keep from getting a rash.
  4.  Also in the big store they had tiny sugar donuts and free coffee. Special treat, but Bill had to bag all the veggies, because my hands were busy. Mouth too.
  5. Also in big store, talked to handicapped red haired, red bearded man buying toys for described tiny black poodle. In agreement that tiny black poodles rule the world and are a terror to big dogs.
  6. Passed a lady with a dog sitting in her cart like a pasha, observing the passing scene. I asked cheerfully not judgementally how the dog gets to come to the store. “Oh, he always comes. He won’t stay home alone.” Very good very quiet Jack Russell. He must be good or stay home alone.
  7. Bought chocolate-covered almonds, and a magazine. Magazine unusual purchase, chocolate covered almonds staple.
  8. Clerk singing and rotating bag carousel, “No more full bags here, we’re done.” Tra-la. She’s so entertaining that we ask if she ever thought of going on the road. She laughs. No, she says, most of the time I’m unaware of playing around. “That’s why we come to your checkout.” Bill says. “Because I’m unaware?” she quips. We laugh.
  9. Bill drops me at the trail. Halfway home, voila, the shiny green metal bench is in place! The man who built and installed it is standing there like a painter with a masterpiece. I ask if the cement holding it is dry. He pokes down through the mulch with his finger. His verdict is…yes. I used quick-setting. I ask if I may I be the first  sit upon it. Yes, again. I perch in the middle of the bench, but alas, there is no one there with a camera to take my picture. Bencher and benchee happy and satisfied with sunny day and good job of trail maintenance.
  10. Waldorf salad for lunch. Apples, celery, walnuts, raisins, mayo, sour cream. Yum.
  11. Unpack small bouquet of brightly colored flowers. I know they’re dyed, but what glowing fuchsias, oranges, greens, and yellows!
  12. What shall I say to make an even dozen paens of gratitude? Oh yes, an invitation to lunch on Friday with dear, good friends. Friday is set to be another treasure day. Thursday too, though I know not what the future may hold, I do know who holds the future.

Nature’s Thanksgiving

21 Nov
A Few Thoughts

Patricia Franklin

Sitting in my backyard near the Rocky Mountains on a quiet Sunday morning, trying to absorb the waning rays of the Autumn sun, I was suddenly overwhelmed by the peace and quiet of nature around me.  Even the birds were silent.  “This is God’s creation in silent and awesome worship,” I thought to myself.  The bare branches of the trees and bushes, a single flower, and even the browning grasses are reaching quietly to the heavens in praise.

The many words and songs that we think are essential in our Sunday worship were absent, and blessedly so.  The awesome silence made the beauty of nature stand out in its simple, beautiful thanks and praise to God.  A quiet breeze comes up and whispers its praise.  Suddenly the cry of a bluejay pierces the stillness in a heartfelt “Alleluia” to its Creator. Even a little yellow butterfly (In November?) comes fluttering around and about and then it is gone. … maybe searching for its Maker?

We are a blessed, yet thankless generation rushing along, worrying and searching for what…. the gifts of the Creator?  They are all around us, but humankind passes by unaware, living in a noisy, self-absorbent little world of its own making.  Yet nature itself is crying out in silent praise and thanksgiving to God.

Thank you, Lord, for the gift of your Creation that never forgets your Goodness, and cries out to you in its quiet, simple and humble way.
