Wise and gentle correction from earthly fathers help children grow up straight and good. I am your heavenly father. I correct you too. Even when it seems that I have been harsh, my actions are always more helpful and fair that those of the best earthly father. You can trust that I am working everything out for the best. When you obtain the tools to help you understand the peaceful way to live, you find true wisdom and a fountain of blessing.

When I do correct you, you must never take it lightly and never be upset about it. If you are upset, you may tell me and we’ll work it out together. When you are afraid or disappointed or angry about something, you will do well to thank me for it. In that way revelation will come to you, soothe your bruises and set you free from worry and mental pain. Don’t fight me or question me but yield to me and you will find the gates of Heaven opening to pour understanding into your spirit.

Hold on to loyal love and don’t let go. Be faithful to all you’ve read in the Bible and been taught.  Let your life be shaped by integrity with truth written upon your heart. That’s how you find favor and understanding.

Wisdom gives the ability to take raw facts and draw right conclusions and meaning from them. My discipline comes from my passionate love for you.

SUNDAY MEMORIES

This is the last segment of the pictures of the “oddities” that we found at Disney Springs.  These pictures have really interested us, and we hope you have enjoyed them, as well.

I’ve always thought that someone at Disney really does have all that “imagineering” mind on them.  There are so many of these little touches that just make up Disney.

And so, here we go:

All around the “new” part of Disney Springs, we found different motifs, such as this one:

Guest Services now has a building all its own, all the better to serve the customers/guests.  It even has a porch with rocking chairs where guests can sit and relax a bit.

Even the fence has an interesting design:

There is a mosaic on the side of one building:

Description: Florida mosaic

While this grouping isn’t “new” at the Springs, it is pure Disney.  And it stays there, year round.

Description: Disney's Days of Christmas - Happy Holiday

One of our very favorite stores – the Christmas Store.  Everything Christmas and Disney, all in one store. Amazing!  Notice above the “Days of Christmas” sign, in the black and white, is a sleigh and reindeer running across the sign.  See?  Little things…

Description: Disney's Days of Christmas

One of the most popular stores at Disney Springs is the Lego store.  Here are a few of the Lego examples – all made from Lego pieces:

Anna, Elsa and Olaf

The Hulk makes his fearsome presence known:

Of course, BB-8 had to be there!

Buzz Lightyear and Woody attached to a rocket

Maleficent has been there a while.

As long as we’ve been going to Disney Springs (originally Disney Village, then Marketplace when they added Pleasure Island, then Downtown Disney when they added West Side), Nessie has been in attendance – courtesy of Lego.

Near the Earl of Sandwich (a really great place to eat!!) is the Tinker Toy.  Wow does that bring back childhood memories!  (Notice the wet pavement?  There are “pop-up” water spouts there.  The little kids LOVE to run through it!)

Description: Tinker Toy

And another popular eatery and a draw for children is the T-Rex restaurant.  Built by the same people who do the Rain Forest Café.

That’s all of the pictures we’ve taken of Disney Springs.  This has been a fun jaunt through the “park” and we hope you have enjoyed it as much as we have.  When you are in Orlando, be sure and head to Disney Springs.  The parking is free; you don’t have to buy anything unless you want to, and you get a good amount of walking exercise at the same time.  It’s one of our favorites.  Come join us!

Julep Farms, Dillard Georgia

4 Mar

On the Porch

Onisha Ellis

We are back in the mountains for a short stay. Our daughter was feeling the need for a vacation and we were more than happy to help. It has been a warm winter in Florida and I was ready for some “chill time.”

We arrived on Saturday to a less than optimal weather forecast. One day of sunshine, then four days of rain. Normally we need a rest day after the 6oo mile road trip, but we decided to take advantage of the day of sunshine to explore a nearby farm/resort, Julep Farms in Dillard, Georgia

Here is the description from their website:

While driving up to Highlands, NC to look for investment properties, Lauren (a decorator, designer, & restauranteur) and Rick Weaver (techno-geek & former US Marine ) stumbled upon this enchanting pasture. Lauren & Rick decided to purchase the land and Julep Farms was born. They then started to create a farm with a nod to the regal elegance of the Kentucky Derby with a splash of sweet tea southern meets modern.

The first time I noticed Julep Farm we were heading to Sky Valley, Georgia and I was impressed with the beauty of the land. I think the property was in the process of being constructed and I thought it was simply a private farm. On another drive to Sky Valley (to enjoy a beautiful waterfall) I glimpsed a sign as we drove past. Once we were home, I looked it up online and added it to my want to see list.

My husband wasn’t quite sure why we were going to a farm but he was happy to drive us. I was pleased to see a good number of cars in the parking area. A good sign.

Here is a side view of the main building.

A closer picture show the outdoor fireplace and casual seating.

It was hard to get a nice photo of the main building’s front.

Before going inside to explore the marketplace, restaurant and event center we walked around checking out the farm. The ponies were adorable but too busy munching to lift their heads for a picture. I had no idea that horse munching is loud!

When our daughter was in Ireland, she fell in love with sheep. We only saw these two.

These two beauties were in charge of the sheep.

The Marketplace sells farm fresh eggs. This is the nicest chicken house I have ever seen! Not a bad fire pit either for sipping cocoa or coffee as the sun goes down.

The farm also rents 4 cabins. Here is a picture of two.

Finally we went inside. The coffee bar, restaurant and Marketplace are decorated in crisp white. Our daughter said it felt very Chip and Joanna Gaines. We weren’t ready for lunch but I could picture myself meeting friends for lunch and enjoying the scenery through the big windows. I didn’t take a photo of the restaurant. I felt weird about taking pictures of strangers.

The merchandise was a nice blend of country and trendy. If one were in a buying mood, you would definitely find something to take home.

The Julep Farm is located at 500 Hwy 246 Dillard, GA30537. Their contact information is 706)-960-9600 info@julep.farm. If you are planning a country getaway, check them out! There are plenty of outdoor activities in the area to keep one busy, including a nearby winery.

As we left Julep Farm, we decided to drive further south on highway 441 to revisit the Tallulah Gorge overlook. We haven’t been there in years. The Tallulah Point Overlook store is rustic and junky looking from the outside, but inside is like stepping back in time.

The store has an upstairs gorge viewing area. The swing beckons one to sit a spell.

And what roadside tourist attraction would be complete without a Sasquatch?

We enjoyed our day in the sunshine. Fortunately, I am a big fan of rainy days as well.

A Time to Live

Melody Hendrix

MelodyWelcome! I’m so glad you stopped in to visit. I am retired and enjoying life. My hobbies are my 5 grandchildren, son and daughter, and my loving husband. I am a photographer and extreme nature lover. I love spending time in my garden or in the wilderness connected to God my Creator.
What a beautiful world we live in. We all have that in common. Natural beauty is everywhere, but sometimes we are not connected until we see a picture, taken just right, that makes it really come into focus and be admired. My passion is to make a connection between the lens and your soul. Photography is my passion.

My photography passion began when my Father handed me his old Ricohflex box camera when I was 12.  It was love at first sight. I still have it. My hand was never empty of a camera since.

I am a native Floridian. I am so lucky to call it home. I was born in Orlando BF (before Disney). My family moved to the Winter Park area when I was very young. Central Florida was so simple and quaint at that time. I wandered the streets barefoot with my friends, never worrying that something bad could ever happen. My Mom used to pick the sand-spurs out of my feet. I still go barefoot. It grounds me to earth and connects me to nature.

I have extensively explored Florida and its diverse beauty. So much to see and so little time. I would love for you to join me in my travels through the images I have taken. I wish you could hear the sounds, smell the fragrance and feel the breath of it. But for now we must be content with exploring with our eyes and only imagine the rest.

Thank you for your interest.

Sticks and Stones

2 Mar

My Take

DiVoran Lites

When I was a child and other children called me names, mother always said to ignore them or say: “Sticks and stones will break my bones, but words will never hurt me.”  Mother was trying to comfort me and at the time I accepted the words as true even though there was a niggling in the back of my mind about them.

Lately, the Lord has let me see and hear many of the names I have been called since about high school. There’s a grand array of them. And although some are crude, others are clever and have a bit more color to them.

Maybe everyone calls other people by unsavory names. I’m sure I do, but blessedly, I’m not being reminded of my sins in this area at this time. That would be heavy to bear. Besides, Jesus washed away all our sins, he threw them as far as the east is from the west never to think of them again.

Robert Burns said in one of his poems, (the one that has the lady with a flea on her hat) “Oh that we could see ourselves as other people see us.” Uhh, how about changing that to: oh, that we could see ourselves as God sees us?

I’ve been reading some wonderful scripture today. It’s from Psalm 91 and it says: “The uncompromisingly righteous shall flourish like the palm tree, be long-lived, stately, upright, useful, and fruitful: they shall grow like a cedar in Lebanon-majestic, stable, durable, and incorruptible. They shall still bring forth fruit in old age; they shall be full of sap and spiritual vitality and rich in trust, love, and contentment. They are living memorials to show that I, the Lord am upright and faithful to my promises; I am your rock, and there is no unrighteousness in Me.” (Rom. 9:14).

Now, isn’t that wonderful? Wouldn’t you rather hear something like that about yourself than being called bad names? I would. Of course, I will be treated as I treat others, so I’m sure I’ve got a ways to go. But anyhow for peace of mind and encouragement, we can’t beat the love and approval of God our Father, Jesus the Son, and Holy Spirit the messenger.

I forgive all the people who have called me by unsavory names over these many years. Whoever you are, wherever you are, I pray you will forgive me for the times when I have hurt you.

Heavenly Father, thank you for blessing us with showers of love every single day we live and even when we die.

While the door “handles” on many of the stores at Disney Springs are fun and interesting to us, we also found some things that I will call “oddities” that we thought you might find fun as well.

We’ve taken pictures of the ones that interest us the most, and present them to you now. These are some of the little “touches” at Disney that we enjoy.  We hope you will, as well.

Have you ever seen an Archimedes Screw?  Or know what it is and what it is used for?  Here is a VERY small version, Disney style:

Here is Fred spinning the wheel and you can see the water flowing from the pool up onto the landing, made for it.  Of course then it goes right back into the pool, but it gives you a feel for what the Archimedes Screw does.

Remember back to the time that Holland  actually increased its land size by using Archimedes Screws to channel water away from the land and back into the ocean to make more land?

Here’s a picture of actual Archimedes Screws at work in Kinderdijk, Holland, from our river cruise in 2015:

Back to Disney Springs:

Here’s the logo for the Coach store.   Cute…

In the middle of one of the major walkways, is a gigantic “directional” star:

Description: Directon star

At the appropriate points of the star, there are directional points, with a symbol, each different:

North has an airplane:

Description: Direction star - North - airplane

South has an old-fashioned horse and buggy:

Description: Direction Star - South - horse and buggy

East has a paddle-wheel boat:

Description: Direction Star - East - paddle boat

West has a train (“go West, young man” hmm?):

Description: Directon Star - West - train

The Irish Pub has a bronze man taking a rest on the bench, his hat sitting beside him:

Description: Irish Pub sign and bronze man

We caught the Rain Forest Café volcano in mid-eruption:

Description: Rain Forest volcano - 2

Have you ever seen a building with grass growing on top of it?  Starbucks has it here:

Description: Starbucks and grass top

The World of Disney Store (largest Disney store ever) has a figure of Stitch outside – and he spits!!  So watch out where you walk!

The World of Disney store also has a cute weathervane:

Small Town Life

27 Feb

On the Porch

Onisha Ellis

I love living in a small town but it does mean that sometimes when one needs to see a specialist, it involves a drive. This morning was one of those appointments. The trip was uneventful, no traffic snarls and we arrived 10 minutes early. So off to a good start.

For over a week I have been having some concern that my eye pressure might be elevated. I had placed a call to the nearest office of my cornea specialist and left a message. No one returned my call and that was unusual. My cornea specialist no longer has office hours in our town, but there are several offices between the location of my morning appointment and our route home. I tried calling two of them but the automatic system dropped my calls. We decided to drop in to the first office we came to and ask for a pressure check appointment. Over the past week I had been self diagnosing…it’s allergies, a sinus issue, or it’s Rosacea. It was time to stop being foolish and risking my vision.

They were kind and offered to work me in. I knew that meant a considerable wait, but I was thankful to be seen. And I was right, something was wrong. I left with a new regimen of eye drops and a follow up appointment.

We still had two errands left to take care of before we made it home. We were ready for lunch!

After supper we scooted in to Aldi to pick up a couple of items. It was a beautiful evening so we drove down to a small park on the Indian River. The eastern sky colors were beautiful. I got out of the car to snap some photos with my phone. I am so very thankful for the medical care that allows me to continue to enjoy God’s beautiful handiwork.

I'm a winnerAfter my retirement, I decided to re-learn the canning and preserving skills I learned from my mother but hadn’t practiced for twenty years. I titled the blog Old Things R New to chronicle my experience.  Since then I have been blessed to have six other bloggers join me, DiVoran Lites, Bill Lites,  Judy Wills, Louise Gibson, Janet Perez Eckles and Melody Hendrix

In addition to blogging, I work as the publicist/marketer/ amateur editor and general  “mom Friday” for my author daughter, Rebekah Lyn. I also manage her website, Rebekah Lyn Books  where we frequently host the best in up and coming authors.

My 2019 goal is to use my love of photographs and words to be an encourager on social media. You can visit Real Life Books and Media You Tube Channel if you would like to view some of the mini-videos I have created for our church, Gateway Community in Titusville, Fl.

A Slice of Life

Bill Lites

As far as accidents is concerned, the Navy has also said that during that same time period, approximately 250 aircraft were lost in Lake Michigan, for multiple reasons, (only 21 pilots were lost).  It should be noted that the U.S. Coast Guard was tasked with the job of providing “crash boats” that followed the carriers for the purpose of rescuing any downed pilots who had to ditch in the lake.

U.S. Coast Guard “Crash Boat”

To date only about 75 of those aircraft have been found and recovered from the bottom of the lake.  As it happens, several years ago, the Valiant Air Command (VAC) Warbird Museum in Florida, where I volunteer as a tour guide, received an F4F Wildcat (FM-1 #414994) fighter aircraft that was recovered from the lake in1993, and restored it to static display condition.  When recovered the aircraft was in remarkably good condition after having sat 300’ underwater on the bottom of Lake Michigan for almost 50 years.  The aircraft’s paint was still blue and the insignias were still clearly readable.

An F4F Wildcat Fighter Recovery from Lake Michigan

The restoration took five years of loving care by the VAC’s volunteer mechanics.  Most of the restoration crew at the VAC were ex-Grumman employees who had built these aircraft during WWII.  Then after the war, when they retired, many of them had moved to central Florida, and when they heard about our restoration, they wanted to be a part of the project.  They did an absolutely fabulous restoration job, and the aircraft looks like it just came off the assembly line.

F4F Wildcat Fighter (414994) Static Display at VAC

While the restoration crew was hard at work, they thought they would try and find out who the pilot was, flying the aircraft the day it ended up in the lake, and what had happened to him.  They did some research, and discovered that he didn’t go down with the aircraft, that his name was Ensign William E. “Dixie” Howell, that he had survived the war, he was still alive (then age 75), and he lived in the small town of Ocala in Central Florida.

      F4F Pilot Ensign W. E. “Dixie” Howell

When the restoration was complete, the museum decided to invite “Dixie” to the dedication ceremony there at the VAC in 1997.  The first thing “Dixie” said when he saw the aircraft was, “I can’t believe it.  That aircraft looks better now than it did the day I crashed it in the lake!”  They took a picture of “Dixie” in the cockpit with a big smile on his face.  I can just imagine how he must have felt.  Here he was looking at the aircraft that he thought he would never see again, much less be able to sit in the cockpit at the controls.  The picture, in his mind, must have been of the last thing he saw as he exited that aircraft after he ditched in Lake Michigan in 1943.   And now he was sitting in that same cockpit 54 years later.  What a memorable occasion that must have been for “Dixie.”

    Dixie & F4F Wildcat (414994) Meet Again

Recently the VAC museum acquired its second Great Lakes recovery aircraft on temporary loan from the Naval Aviation Museum in Pensacola, FL.  This SBD-5 (436291) was recovered by the Navy in 1993 and restored to static display condition by the Naval Aviation Museum before it was loaned to the VAC museum in 2019.  WWII aircraft recoveries from cold fresh water lakes has always made for easier restorations than those from the world’s warm salt water oceans, because of the rapid growth of the coral and the arthropod population in the warmer waters.

Description: C:\Users\Bill Lites\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows Live Mail\WLMDSS.tmp\WLMBB1F.tmp\IMG_8610.JPG

SBD-5 (436291) Static Display at VAC

However, indications from recent Lake Michigan recoveries show that in the last ten years or so, the Zebra & Quagga Mussels (arthropods) have invaded the lake, and are attaching themselves to the derelict aircraft structures, and many other things.  The mussel’s secretion attacks and eats away the paint and even the aluminum metal aircraft structural surfaces.  This makes it much more difficult (and expensive) to restore the aircraft to static condition.  This is especially true with those restorations where the aircraft is being restored back to its original flight condition.

The next time you are in the Central Florida area, be sure to make one of your stops the VAC Warbird Museum and take a look at our beautifully restored aircraft, some of which are seeing the light-of-day again, for the first time, after many years in the cold dark waters of Lake Michigan.
