A Night in the Storm

14 Sep

Reblogging from my daughter’s post on Rebekah Lyn’s Kitchen.

As Irma neared Florida, my husband and I were setting off on a road trip that would take us thousands of miles from our daughter. I thought she would ride out the storm with friends but as the storm grew closer, she decided to go it alone. I was upset. But as I prayed for the ability to accept her decision and not “guilt” her, I found peace.

****************************************************************************************

Hurricane Irma was my first hurricane completely on my own. When it was predicted to come up the east coast, I considered going to stay with some cousins on the west coast, or even getting a hotel in Orlando. When the track changed, sending the eye of the storm up the west coast instead, I decided to stay home.

I could have gone and spent the night with some friends a few miles away. Maybe I should have or maybe God wanted me home alone. I learned a lesson about pride when my power went out at 8pm. One of the reasons I hadn’t wanted to stay with my friends was that my power had been so reliable during Hurricane Matthew last year.

Hurricane bunker provisions

I learned a lot about drawing close to God too. After tornado warnings that were sounded as soon as the previous one expired (at one point my area was under three different tornado warnings at the same time), with the wind howling so loud and my bathroom feeling like a shrinking prison, I turned on my lantern and reached for two books: Fervent by Priscilla Shirer and I Am by John Paul Jackson. I Am is a Bible study I am attending about the names of God, powerful stuff, and Fervent is about learning how to pray powerfully against the evil that seeks to destroy our lives. Reading these books brought my focus to God, my deliverer, my redeemer, my refuge. It was more calming than conversing with another person crowded in a small room.

When I turned the light off to try and sleep I kept hearing the chorus to “O My Soul” by Casting Crowns.

O my soul,

You are not alone

There’s a place where fear has to meet the God you know

One more day, He will make a way

Let Him show you how, you can lay this down

‘Cause you’re not alone.

I don’t know why I have delayed downloading this CD, but once I have power again I will make sure to add it to my library.

I was also reminded of God’s perfect timing. As the worst passed and we were downgrading to tropical storm conditions, I went upstairs to read, there was more light up there. Fervent is broken down into sections to help the reader build a strategy for prayer. The chapter I started reading was on praying for your family. This is important stuff any time, but especially timely for me as there is some stuff going on that needs serious prayer. If I had read this book over the summer as I had intended when I purchased it, this chapter may not have resonated with me as much or I may have forgotten the important points it covers when I need them now.

Finally, I was assured of God’s provision. About an hour after the power went out I went to the kitchen for some reason and found water on the floor. I couldn’t believe the freezer was melting already. Then I heard a drip and swinging the flashlight around I saw water dripping from my pot rack hanging from the ceiling.

I managed to get all of the pots down, then the rack itself, which was a feat. It’s quite a heavy thing. After that the dripping stopped. There appear to be some water spots on the ceiling so I don’t know if the chain was acting as a wick and the weight was drawing the water out of the ceiling beams or what. After the storm I went outside but couldn’t see any shingles missing from the roof.

I put out a call on Facebook for anyone who might be able to come over and take a look. A number of people liked the post, but no one was offering assistance. I went to check on other friends in the area and briefly discussed my situation. I acknowledged that God would provide what I needed and when I got home I found a response on Facebook asking for more information. We talked and arrangements were made for a visit the following day.

As I write this, I still don’t know what caused the leak and I am going on 27 hours without power and yet I am at peace. Don’t get me wrong, there have been times of anxiousness and frustration. There is nothing fun about a house without AC on a warm summer day/night, but I am grateful for this experience.

We talk about God being with us through the metaphorical storms of life, but sometimes it’s good to remember He is with us during the literal storm as well.

Update: Its now been over 65 hours without power but I have been blessed by so many people. Those who have offered their freezer, who have allowed me to charge my devices and provided a hot meal, and two who helped with my roof concern. First, a high school friend came with a ladder and we were able to asses my roof, finding a couple cracks in flashing and slightly lifted shingles. Then I was able to connect with my church’s former maintenance man. He came over and filled in the cracks with caulk. He also checked to make sure there weren’t any other compromised areas. God provided both of these individuals at points when I was beginning to lose hope. I know how fortunate I am to have such minimal damage. Power will be restored eventually. I saw a crew a few blocks away and took them the cookies I made before the power went out as a way to thank them for traveling so far to help us out (they were from Wyoming). Through all of this I have learned a lot about myself and about God. I hope I will carry these lessons with me for a long time.

Bloggers Hunkering Down

10 Sep

The bloggers of Old Things R New live in Central Florida. I would appreciate your prayers for them as well as their families as Hurricane Irma passes over. Central Florida has been under multiple tornado warnings and their have been touchdowns with damage. Fortunately, in our area,  the storm is weaker than the graphic below. Most of our bloggers will be without power . I am not in Florida at this time and will upload posts as our team is able to send them.

To those in the path of Irma, I am praying for your safety.

Ten Inspirations for Grandparents

Inspiration to be a good grandparent is simple—as long as we have love, we have what it takes.

“C’mon sweet baby,” I called to my 2-year-old granddaughter.

With quick steps, she came. And as she stood with her back toward me, I carefully pinned the bells to her blouse, which she told me was pink.

The sound of those bells helped me keep track of her. She might not have understood her Nana was blind. Or maybe she did. What’s important is she knew that we don’t need eyes to love, to guide and to teach.

Time swept by way too fast. She’s 9-years-old now and her brother 7. They both run to me for hugs. But neither needs bells anymore as they answer when I call.

But the call for a grandparent is different. It’s to enrich their lives no matter what we have or what we lack.

Here are ten treasured moments that create that special bond:

  1. The stories we tell about Jesus equips them to face a cruel world.
  2. The embrace we offer carries the warmth of security.
  3. The comfort we impart can soothe their soul when disappointment barges in.
  4. The wisdom drawn from God’s Word fills their mind as they make decisions for life.
  5. The example to persevere, to endure and to give teaches them to do the same.
  6. The guidance we provide keeps them from the pitfalls of life.
  7. The acceptance with love unconditional mends the rejection of the world.
  8. The time we spend with them multiplies the love.
  9. The patience we display brings security to their soul.
  10. The praise we express deepens their confidence and worth.

Grandkids learn from what we do, what we say and how we love.

Appreciate that gray because “gray hair is a crown of splendor; it is attained by a righteous life.” (Proverbs 16:31)

Even if you’re not a grandparent, there may be someone in your life who hungers for what you have to offer.

Pruning

Our life is so fleeting-
Where did the years go?
It seems like only yesterday
my heart was all aglow.

I looked forward to my future,
Optimism was foremost in my mind.
I never had been threatened.
I felt love for all mankind.

So naive in my thinking,
Ignorant of things above.
It took the pruning by the Master’s hand
that I might know true love.

We’ve all heard of pruning.
Gardening books recommend it, too.
Not to be hateful, but sometimes
simply the right thing to do.

Say, you’ve forgotten to prune your impatiens,
and now they’re simply towers-
No problem. Just take some clippers
and “lop off their heads”-
You’ll wind up with more flowers!

I have learned to walk by faith, not sight-
It is the Master Gardener that transforms
darkness into light.

Life Can Be a Spaghetti Map

7 Sep

On the Porch

Onisha Ellis

Last week I wrote about clouds; benign clouds that covered the eclipse as well as painful ones that covered the soul.  This week brings a new array of clouds. Hurricane clouds. Friends and family in Florida are busy preparing for the monster storm, yet some seem to be paralyzed by indecision. Should we evacuate or should we stay? Who can blame them with projection maps like this? Decision time will come in the next 24 hours for Central Florida.

Hurricane Irma Spaghetti Map

Life is fraught with storms and sometimes our lives seem to resemble this map as we try to navigate between our jobs, families, activities and yes, heartache too. I feel this way. But God is so loving and sends encouragment when its least expected. For me it was in the restroom of an indoor flea market.

I like the rest of the verse too.  In The Message paraphrase it reads like this:

“Step out of the traffic! Take a long,
loving look at me, your High God,
    above politics, above everything.”

What is the correct way to pray?

Do I pray too quick? Too long? Not enough words? Too many words? Is my heart in it? What is the correct way to pray?

How much we labor in our prayer time has nothing to do with Labor Day. I just heard a pastor teach about this topic. And admittedly, a few of us squirmed because his words stirred a bit of guilt.  And, goodness, his message elbowed us out of our comfort zone.

“When we ask God for blessings,” he said, “we often repeat mousy petitions.”

Mousy petitions? He explained the prayers we blurt out often carry doubt. We lack the reassurance that God will grant what we ask. They repeat the circumstance, not the victory we can count on. They mention the dark side, and fail to declare the victory that comes in His answer.

And when we ask, we forget to give thanks. We forget to anticipate He will answer. We overlook the mighty way He can exercise His power.

So, what’s the best way to pray? With boldness, with conviction, with authority, with firmness and with holy audacity.

The number of words we use doesn’t matter. Or the flowery expressions either. But, what does matter is the complete faith, the firm authority because of Jesus that makes the difference.

They did for John and Peter. They saw the beggar at the entrance of the temple. “Then Peter said, ‘Silver or gold I do not have, but what I have I give you. In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, walk. Taking him by the right hand, he helped him up, and instantly the man’s feet and ankles became strong. He jumped to his feet and began to walk. Then he went with them into the temple courts, walking and jumping, and praising God’” (Acts 3:6-8).

Why did Peter take the man by the hand? Because he was sure he could get up. Because he declared it in the name of Jesus. Because he counted in Jesus’ power at work. Because he was confident Jesus was working through him. And because he knew the man’s crippled legs were no match to Jesus’ healing power.

Father, remove doubt from my prayers. Instead, show me how to pray with conviction, authority, and boldness as I ask in the name of Jesus’ amen.

What level of certainty do your prayers have these days?

Know God, Know Hope No God, No Hope

1 Sep

From the Heart

Louise Gibson

What a difference the spelling makes.
To know Him is to love Him and others.
To love Him is to serve him,
as we reach out to our brothers.

If you have yet to meet Him,
here is all you have to do.
Confess you are a sinner –
He’s waiting at the cross for you.

Hang on to hope, as on Jesus you wait.
“I will go before you and make
the crooked paths straight.” Isaiah 45

No God – No hope,
I can’t imagine such a scenario.
Why? My heart is too full of love,
since Jesus I came to know!

“Therefore, having been justified by faith,
we have peace with God through our
Lord Jesus Christ, through whom also we have
access by faith into this grace in which we stand,
and rejoice in hope of the glory of God.”
Romans 5:1,2

Clouds

31 Aug

On the Porch

Onisha Ellis

We were excited to be in the path of totality for the August 21, 2017 eclipse. We made plans, invited family and even had some unexpected but joyfully welcome family and friends arrive. We put up a screen tent, set up cameras and even some chaise loungers for optimal viewing.

As totality approached we were dismayed to see clouds streaming in.

We seemed to be holding our breaths as the clouds covered the sun. Then for a brief and amazing moment, the full eclipse blazed in all its glory.

Do you ever feel like clouds are moving quickly over your life? I am feeling that as I type this but just as the sun burst forth from the clouds, I know that God will burn away my clouds and redeem my sorrow.

Do you not know?  Have you not heard? The Lord is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth. He will not grow weary, and his understanding no one can fathom. Isaiah 40:28-29

How to find God’s direction.

Reblogged August 25, 2017

Why do we let our emotions lead our path? When we do, we’re let down. So, how do we find the direction God has for us?

Sometimes I have the satisfaction of volunteering as a Spanish interpreter for events held by non-profit, Christian organizations.

I slipped off my headphones, and pulled away from the mic. “It’s lunch time,” I said to my friend who worked alongside me.

She grabbed her purse from under the table. “Let’s go.”

I held on to her arm and we headed through the maze of corridors behind the stage, looking for our lunch room.

As we turned the corner, a delicious aroma wafted from our right. “Hmm…smells like cheesy pasta.”

“Yes,” my friend said, “I think I smell steaks, rich sauces, and fresh baked pastries too.”

We paused for a second. Our mouths watered. But, we had to press on. That banquet was reserved for the celebrities, singers and famous folks.

The lunch area assigned to the workers like us was located around the corner, and down another hallway.

We entered the room. On a table in the corner, we found a few cardboard boxes; each held a lonely half-frozen sandwich, chips, and a cookie.

As I unwrapped the sandwich, my taste buds protested longing for that delicious fresh gourmet food reserved for someone else.

I fought envy; I really did because a bit of covetousness waited on the plate in my heart.

But right before I took a bite, the greatest thing happened. My friend and I settled at the table. And as we greeted others, we found friends we hadn’t seen since the year before. In seconds, we re-connected, shared stories, laughed, and learned details about those we met for the first time. What a hoot! We teased, and just talked.

We took part of a greater banquet as we delighted in the laughter, simplicity of friendship, and the love between colleagues and friends.

No doubt, when my friend and I had paused close to that banquet room, God was motioning to us, “C’mon, I have something better,” He might have said.

He’s saying the same to you. You might think you know what you want. But follow me, He invites, come this way where the best is waiting for you.

You don’t know. You might not recognize it, nor do you expect it. But I, in my Sovereignty

Have reserved what you need, prepared it and have it ready for you.

He might be speaking to you right now when He says, “I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will counsel you and watch over you…For the word of the LORD is right and true; he is faithful in all he does” (Psalm 32:8 and 33:4).

And since what He does is perfect, will you trust and wait for His perfection to be revealed to you?

Father, forgive the times of my eager desires. Forgive the restlessness that fills me when I want what I think is best. Grant me peace as I wait. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Are you willing to wait and receive God’s direction?

Attitude is Everything

25 Aug

From the Heart

Louise Gibson

author of Window Wonders

If you can’t change your circumstances,
Change your attitude.
A dramatic benefit you will see.
An acceptance of things we cannot change
Will develop a sense of serenity.

God uses life as “on the job training.”
He never promises a life free from care.
But he does promise never to leave or forsake us,
And never give us more than we can bear.

God could spare us from hardship,
But then how would we learn?
How would we grow?
Problems prove our integrity.
I learned far more from my losses in life,
And reached a higher plateau.

Food for Thought:
“Our character, if genuine, is never altered by circumstance.”

Proceed as if success is inevitable.
