04-08-16 storms

Decades ago, while still in my hometown of La Paz, Bolivia, birthday celebrations were a big thing. With a handful of invitations, I ran from house to house on the dirt streets where my friends lived. Anticipation danced in my heart as I delivered them with pride because my Mom had designed them with colorful writing.

My parents gathered enough money to buy ingredients for a birthday cake. And the other treat at my 10th birthday party was made by mixing red Jell-O with evaporated milk. Since we didn’t have the luxury to own a refrigerator, Mom placed them outside, hoping the chilly night would make them gel.

And when my special day came, the friends who accepted the invitation, filed in through the worn, rusty gate of our house. They carried gifts. And in turn, I carry that memory in my heart.

Decade’s later invitations took a different meaning. During the storms of life, I ran down the dirt street of worry and self-pity. The only way to conquer all that was to extend an invitation to Jesus. He accepted and together we celebrated a restoring of my soul.

We can all do the same. But the invitation has to be specific:

• We invite Him into our storm.
• We invite Him into the heartache of the moment.
• We invite Him to share the disappointment in our marriage.
• We invite Him to share the longing for a solution.
• We invite Him into the diagnosis from the doctor.
• And we invite Him to be with us when we face the end of something we treasure.

When Jesus accepts the invitation, He shows up carrying the gift of His promises, colorfully wrapped in His love. They repeat: “The Lord your God is with you, he is mighty to save. He will take great delight in you, he will quiet you with his love, he will rejoice over you with singing.” (Zephaniah 3:17)

Perfect Love Casts Out Fear~Part 2

Beach

My Take

DiVoran Lites

Author, Poet and Artist

You unlocked the park’s bathroom door and stepped out into a cloudy day. You heard sea gull’s caa-caaing and the shushing of the surf. You climbed the stairs of the boardwalk. You then removed your sandals and rolled up your pants legs. When you started walking and felt the roughness of the old boards, you recalled the time when you ran a hand over a shuffleboard table and got attacked by a splinter. Now you watched where you walked because you didn’t want any more wood injuries.

It is hard for you to write these things because you’re afraid people will judge you for your fears. In my reality, though, rear is common to almost all men and women. Does not my word contain at least 365 references to that state of being?

When you stepped off the boardwalk and onto the cool sand, you saw large and small footprints. You saw ruts where folks’ toes dug in as they ran. Because the fisher- folk were to the right, you decided to walk in that direction. If it seemed appropriate you could ask the folks who had their poles stuck in the sand: “What’s biting, and what are they biting on?” All eyes, however, stared at the shivering lines as if mesmerized. All along you thought fishing was a serious enterprise and now you knew it truly was.

You continued toward the old launch pad, which had once held a giant gantry atop a multi-story, tracked, crawler- transporter that which had carried the 363 foot tall Apollo/Saturn V launch vehicle to launches. You recalled the time when Bill got you a pass to go all the way out to the space center with three other worker’s wives to watch a launch. You’ll never forget the giant countdown clock in front of the visitor’s gallery close to Vertical Assembly Building (VAB).

In your mind’s eye, as you walked, you envisioned a vehicle set to go. A column of smoke billowed from the flame-trench underneath. But the Saturn V did not move. Was something wrong? At T minus zero seconds, after full power on all five 1st stage rocket engines had been verified, the swing arms retracted and the vehicle began to rise. When the sound and vibration reached you it was like a continuous thunder clap echoing off the walls of the VAB. You felt the pulsations inside your body. You looked up and saw fire-tinted clouds boiling underneath the Saturn V as it began to leave the earth. It was such an awesome combination of sight and sound that you wanted to laugh, to shout, and to cry all at the same time.

Soon your mind-video ended and you were back on the quiet beach. Now you looked down at the foam scalloping the shore and lapping at your feet. The air felt humid, and the sand undulated like miniature hills. You leaned against a hearty wind and held on to your wide-brimmed hat as you continued down the beach.

After about fifteen minutes, you turned back toward the boardwalk. You asked yourself why you had come. The only reason thing you could think of was because you remembered being there with your children and grandchildren. All at once you remember being afraid for the children and the not wanting to take your eyes off them. The boardwalk was far away. You turned around and headed back. You climbed the stairs, put on your shoes, and rolled down your jeans.

My Beloved Child, hear me in this:

The world is afraid, it has always been afraid. The terrorists can’t take credit for it. You will see the phrase, terror of the night in my word along with a promise that you will not be overcome by it. You needed to come here today, so you could capture those fearful thoughts and memories and let me erase them for you, never to be remembered again. Fear, my dear, is the direct opposite of love. The world, the flesh, and the devil, are the unholy trinity, the enemy. You do not belong to these. You are mine I have called you by my name. You’re “designed for peak happiness, thinking, and health,” (Dr. Caroline Leaf.) I will never, never, ever leave you or forsake you, not for any reason. I have prepared a place for you and I’ll help you move into it now.

Perfect Love Casts Out Fear

Fear Thou Not

My Take

DiVoran Lites

Yesterday, you did something you haven’t done in a long time. You wanted to go to the beach, so at last, you went. As you drove the long road east to Playalinda, you felt stress building in your chest. You didn’t consciously ask me to help you, but I was there anyway. You are always in training, so I don’t expect you to get everything right immediately. You did well to take note of how you felt.

In younger days, you were at that beach up to your shoulders in water, and a surge caught you. Suddenly there was no bottom to stand on. You can swim, but you panicked. In your case a taller man was standing right there and put his hand out to you. He then walked you back to where you could stand on your own and left with your deep-felt thanks. On this day on the way to the beach you also had the memory of a recent accident in your extended family where a much beloved young man died after getting caught in a riptide in another state.

Now, as you drove, you were trying to listen to a book on cassette that you just bought at the library sale. The reader spoke with an edge of fear in his voice, and it made you even more nervous, so you pulled over to get your I Phone out of the trunk so you could listen to music. For an instant before you got out of the car you were afraid the gears would slip and the car would roll into the canal that ran next to the road. Isn’t it exciting to discover the deep fears that you carry around with you? That’s all right. As I have promised, when you resist the devil, he will flee from you. Now that you have asked for this healing I will heal you. Working with me is resisting the arch enemy.

The music was lovely, but the discomfort didn’t entirely go away. The cars that whizzed around you as you drove the speed limit generated more fear. You were afraid it made the other drivers mad that you were in their way. You hate to displease people, and that can be another pervasive fear.

As you arrived at the Canaveral National Seashore you needed to use the convenience. The small cement block building had scraps of toilet paper on the floor and smelled dirty. The flush mechanism didn’t work. You understood that park maintenance was most-likely short-staffed. As you snapped the deadbolt another fear sprung up. You wondered if you’d be able to get out. Your mind flashed back to the time when you were a child and ended up locked inside a service-station-bathroom. Your parents’ restaurant next to the garage didn’t have one, so everyone had to use the filling station for an emptying station. While you were locked in the bathroom, the only person within the sound of your voice was “Old Arnold” whom your mother had warned you not to speak to or take candy from. You didn’t want to disturb him to let you out so you looked around and saw the window that opened into the station’s garage. You were small enough to fit through it, so you got up on the back of the toilet, climbed out and hopped onto the hood of a car. Back in the restaurant you told your dad that you had left the door locked. He knew just what to do. He took you back to the garage and gave you a boost onto the car and into the window saying, “Now push against the door with your shoulder and slide the bolt open.” Of course it worked. Dad knew how to fix things. You slid out and exited by the back door. Old Arnold didn’t notice because he was snoozing in the gas- station chair.

Dear one, hearken to me now. Do you recall when you were afraid to let go of fear because you were afraid that if you didn’t have it to protect you something would go wrong and you wouldn’t be ready for it. You developed a habit of trying to predict bad things that might happen. It’s all right to think and plan, but you overreacted. Other things then happened, not the events you had predicted. A lot of people live like that. It doesn’t work, because it’s not my way.

I want you unafraid. Much of the time you are content and satisfied. You have peace and joy. You, however, have, at times, gone from anxiety to fear to terror and needed prayer from the family of God and strong intervention from me. You don’t want to live like that anymore. We are now ready to retrain your mind and replace your toxic thinking with the mind of Christ.

Three Bible Truths That Struck Fear in my Heart

I'm a winner

Last week as I tried to write this blog, I couldn’t seem to put my thoughts together so I decided to let it rest for a week. I posted my first ever “teaser” and used that time to mull and pray for clarity of thought and words. Until age twelve I spent a lot of time at church. My mother was a Sunday School teacher, my dad a deacon as well as the Training Union director and they both sang in the choir. ( It was a wonderful choir). When they were needed at church, I was there too. Although there were some people who did not behave in a loving, Godly manner, most appeared to be genuine believers, whose desire was to serve God. It was in that church where I gave my heart to Christ and learned how much he loved me.

Over the years I  heard a LOT of sermons, good ones too. Yet there were three teachings of Jesus that I feared:

  • Don’t be a milk drinker
  • The gate to heaven is narrow
  • I never knew you.

I didn’t see how my imperfect self could ever measure up.

Don’t be a milk drinker

The passage that admonished me to not drink milk is Hebrews 12:13-14. Verse 13 reads:

For every one that useth milk is unskilful in the word of righteousness: for he is a babe.

milk-glass-frisch-healthy-drink-nutritious-krug-2

Sermons based on this verse admonished me to stop needing to be spoon fed and grow up.  I turned to Biblegateway to get a more readable translation and found The Message Version.

11-14 I have a lot more to say about this, but it is hard to get it across to you since you’ve picked up this bad habit of not listening. By this time you ought to be teachers yourselves, yet here I find you need someone to sit down with you and go over the basics on God again, starting from square one—baby’s milk, when you should have been on solid food long ago! Milk is for beginners, inexperienced in God’s ways; solid food is for the mature, who have some practice in telling right from wrong.

Sometimes it seemed that as soon as I started on the solid food of  God’s word, I would relapse to the milk diet. I worried that I was stalled there forever, destined to be a milk drinker.

The gate to heaven is narrow. Matthew 7:13-14  worried me a lot during my childhood and early adult years.

“Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it. 14 But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life, and only a few find it.” NIV

I was surrounded by Godly people. How was my mess of a life going to fit through that gate?

In my lifetime, I have seen a trend to “widen the tent” or in this case, the gate. The Message translation explains this far better than I can.

13-14 “Don’t look for shortcuts to God. The market is flooded with surefire, easygoing formulas for a successful life that can be practiced in your spare time. Don’t fall for that stuff, even though crowds of people do. The way to life—to God!—is vigorous and requires total attention. “

This one doesn’t frighten me now. I believe that narrow gate will hold all who earnestly seek the ways of the Savior.

I never knew you. My heart quaked when I considered this scripture, Luke 13:27

But he shall say, I tell you, I know you not whence ye are; depart from me, all ye workers of iniquity. NIV

Puzzled girl

How could he say that?

Once again, I turned to The Message and read several more verses.

23-25 A bystander said, “Master, will only a few be saved?”

He said, “Whether few or many is none of your business. Put your mind on your life with God. The way to life—to God!—is vigorous and requires your total attention. A lot of you are going to assume that you’ll sit down to God’s salvation banquet just because you’ve been hanging around the neighborhood all your lives. Well, one day you’re going to be banging on the door, wanting to get in, but you’ll find the door locked and the Master saying, ‘Sorry, you’re not on my guest list.’

26-27 “You’ll protest, ‘But we’ve known you all our lives!’ only to be interrupted with his abrupt, ‘Your kind of knowing can hardly be called knowing. You don’t know the first thing about me.’

I love how Jesus admonished them to mind their own business and to put their mind on their own life with God. I have learned that spending time with God is not giving him my list of daily requests, rather it is daily giving myself to him. I confess, I am still learning.

Many, many years ago, DiVoran Lites shared with  me her theory of fiery darts and I have never forgotten it. To paraphrase, Satan has a bundle of darts at his disposal and he chooses ones that will attack weakness.

For me he attacked the maturity of my faith (milk drinker), my worthiness to enter Christ’s kingdom (narrow gate)  and my fear of being rejected ( I never knew you). DiVoran suggested that when those darts arrived, I should mentally reject them and return them to the sender. I do this by claiming God’s word in my life, especially the verses that I call my “cling-tos”

I’d like to share with you one of my favorite “cling-to” verses.

Romans 8:38-39

38 For I am convinced that nothing can ever separate us from his love. Death can’t, and life can’t. The angels won’t, and all the powers of hell itself cannot keep God’s love away. Our fears for today, our worries about tomorrow, 39 or where we are—high above the sky, or in the deepest ocean—nothing will ever be able to separate us from the love of God demonstrated by our Lord Jesus Christ when he died for us

Nothing, nothing  can separate me from his love! Isn’t that the best? .

“See, I have written your name on the palms of my hands.” -Isaiah 49_16a_-2

I seem to be needing to use some extra brain power and Divine inspiration to put this weeks planned blog together. So here is a teaser.

Three Bible Truths That Struck Fear in my Young Heart

  • Don’t be a milk drinker

  • The gate to heaven is narrow

  • I never knew you.

I’m not sure about the title. Is truths the best word choice for those verses that bounce around in one’s head creating doubt and fear?

The Terror of the Night

My Take

Terror of the Night png

Psalm 91:5

In the darkness of the night,
I awaken, filled with fright.
I get out of cozy bed,
Bugs a buzzing in my head.
All my joy is left behind.
Where can I find peace of mind?

Oh, what if…my worry cries
What if someone precious dies?
What if I am all alone?
How, for that, could I atone?

“Come to Jesus,” says a voice.
You will always have a choice.
Will you hand to me this knot?
I will calm you on the spot.
Can you praise and thank me now,
Knowing I will act somehow?

Where could I go?

Winning Against Worry

From My Heart

All the water in the world,
however hard it tried,
could never sink a ship
unless it got inside.
All the hardships of this world
might wear you pretty thin-
But they won’t hurt you one least bit
unless you let them in.
(Anonymous)

Lord, why did it take so long
to reach this plateau-
to savor the moment I am in?
An acceptance of things I cannot change
has wondrously eased my chagrin.

The “serenity prayer” holds such wisdom-
Simply apply it to your heart.
God has not promised skies always blue,
But from our heart He will never depart.

There is no use in carrying around “worry and regret”.
They only weigh you down.
Always keep yourself open to hope and to love.
A smile will replace a frown

Make these words your battle cry
as you take on the Giant of Worry.
Louise Gibson

“Don’t dwell on tomorrow’s stress
Jesus told us that “tomorrow will take
care of itself.” (Mathew 6:24)

“Look inside, be kind to yourself”
Psalm 63:3 “Thy loving kindness is better than life.”

” The night doesn’t last forever,
and tomorrow will surely come.”

“Worry about nothing-
Pray about everything”

“When God pushes you to the edge,
trust Him fully, because only two things can happen.
Either He will catch you when you fall,
or He will teach you how to fly”.

Get Over It and Move On

30 Jan

On The  Porch

Onisha Ellis

I'm a winner

My friend DiVoran and I were having a lively chat one day when  get over it came up. On the surface it seems like a rude, heartless thing to say, but is it?

I remember the times I said  “get over it and move on” to my teenage daughter after her first big heartbreak. She really hated when I said that, but what I was really saying was, work through this, stop letting it control you.

It takes courage, faith and work to overcome a broken heart, hurt feelings and disappointments. We don’t get over it without dealing with the situation. These are the actions I use when I need to get over it.

First I pray. I let God know I am counting on Him for help to accomplish these steps.

  • Determine to accept the situation. I don’t have to like it.
  • Accept responsibility for my actions. Yes, even if I feel justified.
  • Grieve the loss. I believe a time of grieving is a vital part of healing.
  • Choose to let go of the pain or anger. I can’t heal as long as I am hanging on to it.
  • Best of all, forgive.  Carrying a grudge can be a mighty heavy load.

Do I do this everyday and in every situation? Nope, but I wish I did. Guess I’m still  learning.

What to do When Fear Attacks

25 Jan

Walking by Faith, Not by Sight

Janet Eckles Peres

“I took my small dog for a walk one night,” my friend Ian said, “the area was dark except for a light near the big fountain in the courtyard of the apartment complex.

I heard my neighbor yell from her second-floor balcony. But the sound of the water in the nearby fountain drowned her words. So I returned the greeting. Since it was Christmas time, I assumed she had yelled out ‘merry Christmas’.

Then her shout became louder, ‘Look behind you, Ian’!

I turned. And my eyes caught the glimpse of a big, furious javelina charging at me and my small dog. Heart thumping, with one swoop I scooped my puppy. And I took off like a bullet. That’s when I had my Forest Gump moment. My neighbor shouted, ‘Run, Ian, run!”

Ian had his neighbor, but we have the Lord shouting to our soul,
run, run as fast as you can’. When would He say that? Each time we’re being attacked by the beast of fear.

You’re been there, haven’t you? During dark nights, out of nowhere, with no warning, fear charges at you. Fearful money will run out. Fearful our kids won’t grow up like we want them to. Afraid of losing our health. Fearful to be alone. Afraid to stay with the wrong person…afraid to leave them. Afraid we’ll never heal from the heartache.

Goodness gracious, God is shouting to you and me, “run, run from that spirit of fear.”

And with the same authority as David did, with the same assurance and assertion, we declare: “The LORD is my light and my salvation- whom shall I fear?
The LORD is the stronghold of my life-of whom shall I be afraid?” Psalm 27:1-2

Father, how foolish to be afraid, knowing you’re the stronghold of my life, of my decisions, of circumstances, relationships and my future. With your power working in me, I have the strength, the courage and the authority to defeat any attack of fear. In Jesus name. Amen.

–What has you afraid today?
–Is your fear one that God cannot overcome?
–How will you display that new courage found in Christ?
