God Sends Angels

My Take

DiVoran Lites

When we live our lives within the shadow of God Most High, our secret hiding place, we will always be shielded from harm. How, then could evil prevail against us or disease infect us?

God sends angels with special orders to protect you wherever you go, defending you from all harm. If you walk into a trap, they’ll be there for you and keep you from stumbling. You’ll even walk unharmed among the fiercest powers of darkness, trampling every one of them beneath your feet!

For here is what the Lord has spoken to me: Because you have delighted in me as my great lover, I will greatly protect you.

I will set you in a high place, safe and secure, before my face. I will answer your cry for help every time you pray. You will find and feel my presence in your time of pressure and trouble.

I will be your glorious hero and give you a feast. You will be satisfied with a full life and with all that I do for you. For you will enjoy the fullness of my salvation!

DiVoran has been writing for most of her life. Her first attempt at a story was when she was seven years old and her mother got a new typewriter. DiVoran got to use it and when her dad saw her writing he asked what she was writing about. DiVoran answered that she was writing the story of her life. Her dad’s only comment was, “Well, it’s going to be a very short story.” After most of a lifetime of writing and helping other writers, DiVoran finally launched her own dream which was to write a novel of her own. She now has her Florida Springs trilogy and her novel, a Christian Western Romance, Go West available on Amazon. When speaking about her road to publication, she gives thanks to the Lord for all the people who helped her grow and learn.  She says, “I could never have done it by myself, but when I got going everything fell beautifully into place, and I was glad I had started on my dream.”

Man-angels~Part 2

My Take

I appreciated my caring family’s offers to drive me to our son’s and wife’s house, but I knew I was perfectly capable of driving myself to Orange City. It turned out to be the best vacation I’ve had in a long time. Because we are all busy, active, and productive, we have not had much time to talk lately. Now we did and it was glorious. I see my daughter because she lives closer, but my daughter-in-love and I have enjoyed conversations since we first met, so we were glad of the opportunity to catch up.

The evening of the storm we three sat and talked after supper. That night in my absent granddaughter’s beautiful room, I heard the wind and rain and something flapping, but I had my earplugs in and I felt loved and safe, so I didn’t have much trouble going to sleep. The power went out the next day, so we had no electricity, but the shutters were off and we did have plenty of water. We made up a hurricane casserole, using cooked wild rice layered with spinach and turkey-roast chunks. The man-angel cooked it on the outside grill with the lid down. It tasted delicious and the man-angel finished it off after we two ladies were full. It was a meal to remember. Every light in the house went on after we finished it.

On Friday afternoon people began coming out of their houses and driving by in their cars. We heard chains saws revving up and trees protesting as the half blown-over ones came to rest on the forest floor. I talk to myself sometimes, so I asked myself: “What shall I do now?” I had some writing to do and a good book to read and daughter-in-love had a puzzle. But she came right into my self-talk and made the wonderful suggestion that we go for a walk now that the storm was over. We got the dog’s lead and ventured out. It is a semi-rural neighborhood and the pastures were green and the fresh air smelled of cedar and pine. We discovered we had two more miles worth of talking to do.

We saw a large herd of domestic Alpacas that came right up to the fence, to say hello to Laika.

At another property, something ran down a small incline from the house to greet us. We thought, from the way it trotted, that it was a small black and white dog, but it turned out to be a little pig instead.

We then saw two sand-hill cranes in a field and our menagerie felt complete.

On the Porch

I'm a winner

When my beloved dog, Max died,  I decided to not adopt another dog. One reason was that it just hurt too much to lose him.

Max

When we moved to North Carolina I was delighted to discover our new home came complete with a porch dog. At first we didn’t know his name so the grandchildren named him Oreo, so named due to his black and white markings. We later learned his name is Gus. We call him our porch dog because he comes to sit with us on our porch, he is always polite never begging for food or jumping( he does occasionally try to be a lap dog). He just wants to share his love with us. On days my husband works in his wood working shop, Gus is there to guard the door and keep him company and is always ready for a walk to the mailbox. In return we share juicy tidbits of meat scraps. His owners don’t mind.

One day last week Gus did the sweetest thing. It was a very chilly morning and Mike was in the garage, changing the oil in our car  Even though he laid some blankets on the concrete he was still  freezing. As he lay there, shivering, Gus found Mike and crawled under the car. He laid down next to him, then sensing how cold Mike was, he snuggled closer, molding his body to Mike, sharing his warmth with him.

The Bible speaks of entertaining angels unaware, I wonder if Gus might be ours.

From My Heart

author of Window Wonders

When something happens that is unexplainable,
and excites our inner core-
It leaves you with a sense of awe,
and the desire to know more.

God tells us that “He will put His holy angels
in charge of us, to keep us in all our ways”-
At the time we are being challenged, though- negative thoughts create a haze.

I was driving home alone one night,
not late, but it was dark.
To avoid a lot of traffic I took a back road
where activity was stark.

I have driven this path many times,
But always during the day.
“As fate would have it, I missed my turn
but continued on my way.

It was a dark night, but street lights were few-
Suddenly I was filled with dread!
The road seemed to come to an end, and
dense woods were straight ahead.

“Dear Lord, I need your help,
I don’t know what to do.
There seems to be a ditch on either side,
and trees ahead obstruct my view.”

Two bright lights appeared ,
as a truck came into sight-
“Out of the woods, at this hour?
Lord, your Angel saved the night!

An angel? Yes, I have no doubt.
What other reason could there be
By His bright lights, I turned around
and continued on home safely

I was going to follow the truck a ways,
but it disappeared from sight.
Mission accomplished!!
An angel truly saved the night!

Psalm 34:4 “I sought the Lord, and He answered me
and delivered me from all my fears”.

Our son and daughter-in-law are empty nesters, so we all make an effort to get together with the grandchildren several times a year. Since our granddaughter and her young man are theater majors, a show is our favorite place to go. We have supper before or after of course.

Yesterday we parked four cars in the lot at the Bob Carr Auditorium in Orlando because we were heading out in different directions afterwards. We walked the mile to Church Street for supper in a bitterly cold wind. We knew it was going to be cold, but none of us believed it could ever be that cold. That’s the way we are in Florida, cold takes us by surprise. No one was truly dressed for it.

After supper at the restaurant, we decided to take the free bus back to the theater so we walked to a bus stop. We discussed other unsatisfactory options as we waited because it was just so cold. Our grandson and his young lady, our granddaughter and her young man huddled, and our son and his wife huddled with us. We asked the “kids” to come closer and they shuffled en masse without letting go of each other. We then had an eight-person huddle. A woman about my age came up shivering and we invited her in, so now we had four pair and a spare. She said she wasn’t a Snow Bird, she was from Seattle, so she was a Rain Bird. She said it sometimes seems colder in Florida than anywhere else.

The empty bus arrived and we all got on. At the next stop, a man who appeared to be homeless came on and stood up front near the driver. We thought we were supposed to get off there so we rose, but: “Next stop says the driver,” and we all sat down again. The homeless man turned to our son, the leader of the pack, and asked, “Are all of these yours?” Our son nodded. “You’re blessed,” said the man.

We all felt warm and close now, and glad that a stranger had recognized our bond. Say, maybe he wasn’t a homeless guy after all, maybe the lady traveling alone wasn’t a real “Rain Bird,” either. Perhaps they were both angels sent to remind us that our lives, “might have been,” as Jane Kenyon’s poem says, “Otherwise.” They could have been, you know.

He Will Order His Angels

A Slice of Life

 Bill Lites

Do you remember where you were when terror struck the United States on 9/11/2001?  I’m sure you do.  I was having breakfast with my family at the DeLeon Springs State Park in Florida when the terrible news came across the airwaves. I remember how deathly quiet it was as all airplanes in this country were grounded.   You might remember how, everything seemed to be on hold, as if the world held its breath to see what would happen next.  It wasn’t until we got home later that day that we were able to see the news reports and only then begin to understand the impact of what had happened and how it was going to change the lives of all Americans.

As it happened, six months earlier, my wife and I had signed up for a trip to Spain, to begin on 9/18/2001.  We had been looking forward to that trip with anticipation for the past six months.  Now what were we going to do?  All the airlines were shut down, and who knew for how long!  Would our trip be cancelled?  Would we be able to go?  Should we go?  We decided that If the airlines started flying again, and If we were allowed to go, and If we could get seats, we wouldn’t let this event ruin our plans.

By some miracle, things began to calm down, the airlines started flying again, and since many people were “Never going to fly again!” we had no problem confirming our itinerary on the scheduled date.  The atmosphere in the airports in New York, Paris, Malaga, and on the planes was very tense, but most everyone forced a smile and was very courteous to us.  When we arrived in Malaga, Spain our luggage went on to Istanbul, Turkey and it was two days before it got back to us.  Hey, No surprise there, right.

At our base hotel in Torremolinos, and on the bus tours to the Alhambra and a Spanish olive factory, everything was conducted pretty much as if nothing had happened.  It was on our ferry trip from Gibraltar to Morocco that we got our first glimpse of how 9/11/2001 had affected many of the peoples of the world.  A Muslim family came up to us and said, “We are very sorry about what happened in America.”

Then again in Tangier, as we were shopping at one of the shops in the Kasbah, the owner said, “Please come back, we need you.”  That evening at the hotel, after our dinner, a professor from the local collage came and talked to us about his modernized family, and how most of the Muslim world are not extremists and only want to live a trouble free life, as we do

Overall, we had a very wonderful vacation trip.  We were able to visit with the people first hand, in and around the beautiful Costa del Sol region of southern Spain, as well as in Tangier, Morocco and see how differently they lived just across the water from one another.

If it hadn’t been for DiVoran getting sick and missing some of the tours, we could have called it a perfect trip.  Now who would ever have guessed after 9/11/2001 that we would have been able to say that on 9/28/2001?
