Random Memories of Germany-Part 2

SUNDAY MEMORIES

Last time, I wrote about the pathway between our housing area (Mark Twain Village or MTV) and Patton Barracks in Heidelberg.

It was a shortcut between the facilities, and one we could walk easily.  We were able to experience a lot of God’s good earth along that pathway.  We saw the garden platz that the Germans used to grow their own vegetables.  But the blackberry bushes were our favorites.  And the berries were free to any and all who would or could pick the berries.  Yummmm!

We also enjoyed the pizza that was made at the pizza parlor on Patton Barracks.  And it was a favorite of most of the military there – of any and all ranks!

But I have another memory of that pathway.  It started with us arriving in Germany and getting into temporary housing.  We were there several weeks in that glorified hotel room, and had to eat either in the restaurant downstairs, or on the economy (military speak for the civilian population).

One of the first things we did was to locate a church for us to attend.  Of course there was the base Chapel, but that really didn’t suit us, even though Fred’s father had been a Chaplain in the Air Force most of his career.  (I say most, because he was a Chaplain in the Army during World War 2, before the Air Force became the Air Force)

In finding the church, we found it was meeting in the church building that was owned by a German Baptist congregation.

The church we met in

It was within walking distance of MTV, and so when we moved in there, we walked most Sundays to the church.  However, the German congregation met during what we considered our Sunday School time, so our Sunday School met in an English Institute which was a school that taught English as a second language to Germans. It was not far from the church facility.  And then, following Sunday School time, we would all go over the few blocks to the German church building and have our worship service.

All that to say that we found the pastor of that church had been there for his three year term, and had already resigned and was ready to head back stateside.  In the few weeks we were in the church, I got to know the pastor’s wife fairly well.  She was telling me that one time she was doing her jogging along the pathway between MTV and Patton Barracks when a German teenager came upon her with his bicycle.  He began to ride behind her, as if chasing her.  She said she finally turned around to him and said “geh weg!! (go away!)”  At that point, he stopped chasing her.

Well, I thought it was funny.  I told it to Fred, and we devised a skit to retell the story during a “roast” the church had for the pastor and his family before they left Germany.  I had on a pair of shorts under my skirt, and we fashioned a set of “handlebars” for Fred, complete with a sign saying “bicycle,” and when the time came for our skit, I took off my skirt, jumped up, Fred took up his handlebars and began chasing me around the room.  We went on for a few minutes, and then I told him to go away!

Looking back – it was a fun memory.  We haven’t kept up with that pastor and his wife.  However, the pastor that followed became our oldest daughter’s father-in-law, so we have kept up with them.  But that’s for another story.

QUARANTINE TIME – TAKE 3

I’m sincerely hoping that this will be the final “Quarantine Time” post I will make.  I hope that for the most part, it will be over by next week, and the country will be up and running as it should be.

However, along that line, there was something on facebook recently that really caught my eye.  I would like to present it to you here:

Each one of these has predicted the same thing – we’re ALL going to die!  Well, yes, we are – eventually.  As my beloved father-in-law said, “100% of us die.”  But we do NOT have to live in fear.

And that brings me to something else I saw on facebook:

Fear does not stop death.  It stops life.  And worrying does not take away tomorrow’s troubles.  It takes away today’s peace.

And yet again:

I never thought I would see a time that so many people were so afraid of dying that they were willing to stop living.

I mentioned to someone recently that my step-father was the stereotypical pessimist.  For instance, as we were about to go to Germany in 1980 for our three year tour in Heidelberg, my step-father said to me, “well, I hope to see you again!”

Almost in a fury, I turned to him and said: “Sid, if the balloon goes up (world war 3) while we are overseas, one of two things will happen – I’ll either live or I’ll die.  If it is God’s timing for me to die, then NOTHING in this world can keep me here.  If I am to live, then NOTHING in this world can take me out.  I REFUSE TO LIVE IN FEAR!”

And that has pretty much been my mantra ever since.  My life is in God’s hands, and I trust Him completely.  And if it is, indeed, time for me to die, then I know I will be instantly in the presence of my Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ!  Nothing is better than that.

The peace of mind that brings to me is far beyond anything I could imagine.  And as I said before,

I REFUSE TO LIVE IN FEAR!

Jesus promised:

Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you.

I do not give to you as the world gives.

Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.

John 14:27

And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding

will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

Philippians 4:7

Do not live in fear!  God has your back!

Quarantine Time: Take 2

SUNDAY MEMORIES

As I mentioned last time, we are still in “lockdown” or quarantine over this COVID-19 or coronavirus.  Fred and I are doing pretty well, all things considered.  Here in Florida, things are beginning to open up again, and for that, we are thankful.  The only way to get this economy back on track – is to get PEOPLE back to work!

One of the things we’ve missed the most is not being able to go to our house of worship and fellowship with our fellow believers.  I think a lot of people are having the same issues.

And that brings me to what I want to mention today.  Our church has done everything in their power to bring God’s word to us.

As soon as the quarantine was ordered, we stopped meeting in the building – and the Senior Pastor had us do a “drive in” church.

Credit Google search and South Orlando Baptist Church website

We all parked on the grass in front of the building, sat in our cars, tuned in on our radios to the special fm frequency they had acquired, and listened to our pastor preach.

Credit Deborah Selfridge

Our church school has a bus that they parked near the main street, and someone lent us a scaffolding, set in front of the bus, that the pastor stands on to preach.  (Incidentally, we are back to having the drive-in church, now that some of the restrictions have lifted)

Some church members were unable to drive to the church – or were afraid to do so – and so the pastor preaches the same sermon an hour later live stream over YouTube channel.  Our Minister of Music and the music team (piano, guitar, drums, trumpet, flute) have put together the music portion of the regular service, and it’s on YouTube along with the sermon.

Okay, that works.  Then “they” said we couldn’t do the drive-in church.  So it was just the YouTube version for us all.  At that time, our Sunday School teacher set up video conferencing with a Zoom meeting, and we began having our Sunday School time before the worship service.

The Deacons began having their monthly meeting via Zoom.

Any other committee meetings that needed to meet are being held via Zoom.

The Wednesday evening service began having time on Zoom for any members who care to tune in.

The Legends (our senior adult group) have a call-in conference call Bible Study every Tuesday morning with the pastor, for an hour.

The Sanctuary Choir began having meetings with our Minister of Music via Zoom on Thursday evenings.

In other words, our church has NOT stopped meeting!  Something that a lot of people don’t realize – or understand – is that the church is NOT the building!  The church is the PEOPLE.  We have God living in us – each and every one of us that are believers in Jesus Christ as our Lord and Saviour.  WE ARE THE CHURCH – and we will not allow any government or plague or virus or anything else stop us from worshiping our God.

TO GOD BE THE GLORY!   PRAISE HIS HOLY NAME!

Quarantine Time

SUNDAY MEMORIES

Well, we are still in “lockdown” or quarantine over this COVID-19 or coronavirus.  At this point in time, we are finally beginning to see the light at the end of the tunnel, and states are beginning to open up things.  Thank goodness!

We’ve had people ask us how we are coping with being in the house all day every day.  I assume that for some people, it is a true hardship.  We understand the there has also been a dramatic uptick in domestic violence and child abuse during this time.  That is horrible, and we pray for those families.

As for the two of us, we’ve told people that actually, since we are both retired, the days aren’t so very different than they have been.  We still come and go as we please, it’s just different.  For instance, we still go “out” for lunch – it’s just that it is “take out” now, and we bring it home to consume.  We usually stay home for supper.  But some days the weather has been nice enough that we are able to open up the house – the windows are open, and the patio door stands open and lets that wonderful Spring air breeze through the house!  That gives the feeling of being outside and openness.

But one thing we have done that we don’t usually, is watch movies.  We have quite an extensive DVD collection, and some of them we haven’t watched in quite a long time.  So Fred began rummaging around through them recently, and came up with a couple that we wanted to watch.

The first one he pulled out was “Around the World in 80 Days” – the original one, with David Niven.  It’s a classic!!  It has been a favorite of ours for a long time.  And actually, there is a history of that movie for Fred.

When he was living in Japan in 1955-1957  in a suburb of Tokyo, when August 1957 , arrived,  it was time for him to leave his family and fly back to the USA to attend college.  One of his high school class mates was scheduled on the same early morning flight from Tokyo’s large international airport.  The day before their departure, the boy’s parents put them in a large US government run hotel in downtown Tokyo.   While exploring the area, they learned that the movie, “Around the World in 80 Days” was playing in a nearby theater. They managed to purchase tickets to see that very movie.  He still has the ticket, and here it is!

It’s a bit worse for the wear, but you can make it out.  He said the theater was built specifically for that movie, and was one of the first large-screen, cinemascope, surround-sound theaters in the world.  He said there must have been about 100 speakers completely around the theater.  If anyone reading this has seen that movie, then you remember the magnificent music from that movie.  In surround-sound it would have been fantastic!

Fred said that it was a 6:30 p.m. showing.  He also said that the ticket cost 500 yen, which at that time was equivalent to about $1.40.  Pretty inexpensive for that major production!  It was an adventure he has never forgotten.

So that was one of our day’s adventures during this quarantine time.  We’ve actually enjoyed our time together.

How about you?

SUNDAY MEMORIES

Judy Wills

Back in August of 2016, I started a mini-series of blogs, about “My Love Affair with Disney.”  I wrote several “episodes” in that series that told about how Fred and I enjoy Disney World so much, and what of Disney stuff we have around the house.

One thing I mentioned and described I would like to rephrase here:

Our youngest daughter, Janet, worked at a Disney Store once upon a time, and she supplied us with quite a bit of Disney stuff.  One of my favorite things she gave us, were figurines of some of the characters from Disney’s 1939 original Fantasia.  I enjoyed them so much, that I had a friend (who is a wood worker by trade), fashion a shadow box for them.  That box and those figurines now grace a wall in our house.  I think they are adorable!  Unfortunately, I have broken one of the pieces, but have substituted another Mickey in its place.  And another friend who worked for Disney, presented us with “Mickey’s House” snowglobe that rests upon the top of the shadow box.

What I did NOT do with that is take a picture of the shadow box, so my readers could see what I have, so here it is:

On another Disney note, our oldest daughter, Karen and her husband, Brian, gave us a BIG book for Christmas titled One Day at Disney – Meet the People Who Make the Magic Across the Globe.  It’s a beautiful book, and with pictures of some of the people who work the Disney magic at all the Disney facilities around the world.  And that includes ABC, that Disney owns.  Fascinating book!

But one entry in the book had me laughing out loud, and I would like to share it with you, now.  It is the story of Joseph Hernandez, who is a captain of the Mark Twain Riverboat at Disneyland in California.  He tells the story…well, let me quote the story:

“The actual maiden voyage for the Mark Twain was a couple days prior to the park’s opening, for Walt and Lillian Disney’s anniversary that year…..Envisioned by Walt himself, the Mark Twain was an opening-day attraction, one of many park features overseen during construction by retired Admiral Joe Fowler.

“Admiral Joe Fowler had come down to do an inspection of the Mark Twain prior to departure, and he found Lillian Disney on the main deck, making sure everything was neat and tidy….As soon as he stepped foot on the boat, she handed him a broom.”

Now the part that had me laughing out loud was that last part!  I suspect that Admiral Fowler hadn’t swabbed a deck since he was a mid-shipman!  And Lillian Disney handed him a BROOM? That’s hilarious!!  Well, it’s hilarious to me, anyway.

Just thought I would pass along those little tidbits of Disneyana.  Hope you enjoyed them both!

As I mentioned recently, I frequently have to go through the stuff on my computer, just to weed out stuff I don’t need any more.

In doing so, I often come across something that tickles my funny bone.  Below is part two of something I found.  Enjoy!

A minister waited in line to have his car filled with gas just before a long holiday weekend.  The attendant worked quickly but there were many cars ahead of him in front of the service station.  Finally, the attendant motioned him toward a vacant pump. “Reverend,” said the young man, “sorry about the delay.  It seems as if everyone waits until the last minute to get ready for a long trip.”

The minister chuckled, “I know what you mean.  It’s the same in my business. “

*************************************************************************

A father was approached by his small son who told him proudly, “I know what the Bible means!”

His father smiled and replied, “What do you mean, you ‘know’ what the Bible means?”

The son replied, “I do know!”

“Okay,” said his father.  “So, son, what does the Bible mean?”

“That’s easy, Daddy.  It stands for ‘Basic Instructions Before Leaving Earth.'”

*************************************************************************

The minister was preoccupied with thoughts of how he was going to ask the congregation to come up with more money than they were expecting for repairs to the church building.  Therefore, he was annoyed to find that the regular organist was sick and a substitute had been brought in at the last minute.  The substitute wanted to know what to play.

“Here’s a copy of the service,” he said impatiently.  “But you’ll have to think of something to play after I make the announcement about the finances.”

During the service, the minister paused and said, “Brothers and Sisters, we are in great difficulty; the roof repairs cost twice as much as we expected, and we need $4,000 more.  Any of you who can pledge $100 or more, please stand up.”

At that moment, the substitute organist played “The Star Spangled Banner.”

And that is how the substitute became the regular organist!

As I mentioned recently, I frequently have to go through the stuff on my computer, just to weed out stuff I don’t need anymore.

In doing so, I often come across something that tickles my funny bone.  Below is part one of something I found.  Enjoy!

There was a very gracious lady who was mailing an old family Bible to her brother in another part of the country.  “Is there anything breakable in here?” asked the postal clerk.

“Only the Ten Commandments,” answered the lady.

*************************************************************************

“Somebody has well said there are only two kinds of people in the world.  There are those who wake up in the morning and say, “Good morning, Lord,” and there are those who wake up in the morning and say, “Good Lord, it’s morning.”

*************************************************************************

A minister parked his car in a no-parking zone in a large city because he was short of time and couldn’t find a space with a meter.  Then he put a note under the windshield wiper that read:  “I have circled the block 10 times.  If I don’t park here, I’ll miss my appointment.  Forgive us our trespasses.”

When he returned, he found a citation from a police officer along with this note “I’ve circled this block for 10 years.  If I don’t give you a ticket, I’ll lose my job.  Lead us not into temptation.”

*********************************************************************

There is the story of a pastor who got up one Sunday and announced to his congregation:  “I have good news and bad news.  The good news is, we have enough money to pay for our new building program.  The bad news is, it’s still out there in your pockets.”

********************************************************************

While driving in Pennsylvania a family caught up to an Amish carriage.  The owner of the carriage obviously had a sense of humor, because attached to the back of the carriage was a hand printed sign…

“Energy efficient vehicle:  Runs on oats and grass.

Caution:  Do not step in exhaust”

********************************************************************

A Sunday School teacher began her lesson with a question, “Boys and girls, what do we know about God?”

A hand shot up in the air.  “He is an artist!” said the kindergarten boy.

“Really?  How do you know?”  the teacher asked.

“You know – Our Father, who does art in Heaven… “

Easter Sunday 2020

Created with GIMP

(Rebloged from 2014)

I really love Christmas!  All the brisk weather (in the colder climes), the Christmas trees and wreaths.  The decorations.  But especially the music.  It’s so much fun to hear and sing – both sacred and secular.  It’s such a special time of year.

But for me – and all of Christianity – Easter is the very, VERY best!  Of course, Christmas had to come first – to bring the Christ Child into this world.  But Easter brings us eternal life…and that beats the socks off a fun, cute song any day!

The songs associated with Easter are so exciting – and uplifting – and inspiring – and so full of hope and promise.  They tell of Christ’s death, yes, but also of that glorious moment when HE AROSE!  Can you imagine it?  God’s power is so tremendously great that He actually raised Jesus from death back into life!  Amazing!!  It’s so easy to just say…He arose.  But just think of it – He actually rose FROM THE DEAD BACK TO LIFE!  That never happened to anyone else, that didn’t physically die again.  Our Savior lives again and still, and forever.

There’s a lot of anti-Christian stuff going on right now, that borders on persecution.  Yes, I know – I really haven’t a clue what true persecution is like.  But this is the most anti-Christian attitude in this country that I’ve ever felt.  And it doesn’t feel good.

Seems like every Easter there is something that happens to a church here or there that actually backfires on the perpetrators.  For instance, when we lived in Panama City, Florida back in the 1970’s, there was a Lutheran church who put up a “tomb/cave” on their front lawn every Easter.  They would have a “stone” rolled across the front, that on Easter morning was “rolled away” to reveal the open/empty tomb.  One year, the whole thing disappeared!  Turns out, some teenagers, on a dare, took it away.  So, instead of harming the message – the newspaper got ahold of the story – took pictures and all – and it made the front page news! Backfire, see?

And then when we lived in a small town in Virginia, our church had put up some sort of display on our front lawn – and some of the “soldiers” disappeared.  Same thing – the city newspaper (and possibly the TV stations in town) got wind of the disappearance, and interviewed the Pastor about it.  Again, it made the headlines and news stories.  The culprits were found and the soldiers returned.  Another backfire.

All that to say that I am convinced that there is still a remnant of believers in this country, and that God will honor those who still trust Him.  What is done in the dark will be brought to light – and God’s name will be glorified.

HE IS RISEN!   HE IS RISEN, INDEED!

Some years ago I saw this somewhere, and it really tickled my funny bone. See if it appeals to you, as well:

Remember it takes a college degree to fly a plane, but only a high school diploma to fix one; a reassurance to those of us who fly routinely in our jobs.

After every flight, UPS pilots fill out a form, called a ‘gripe sheet,’ which tells mechanics about problems with the aircraft.  The mechanics correct the problems; document their repairs on the form, and then pilots review the gripe sheets before the next flight.

Never let it be said that ground crews lack a sense of humor.

Need a Good Belly Laugh?

29 Mar

SUNDAY MEMORIES

Judy Wills

Something happened to me years ago that I remember – and it usually produces a good belly laugh to anyone to whom I tell it.  It wasn’t funny – at least to me – at the time, but that’s the way of things, isn’t it?

Okay, here goes:  We were living in San Antonio, Texas at the time.

Our girls were quite young.  Fred had gone somewhere (I don’t remember where) and had taken our only car with him.

As it happened, I was having…..well.….how do I put this delicately?  Ummm intestinal issues?  Rather severe, as a matter of fact.  Nothing I did seemed to help.  I called the hospital, Wilford Hall, on Lackland AFB, and explained my situation. They assured me that, if I could get there soon, they would take me right in and fix me up.

Next question – who can I get to come stay with the girls?  And I needed a car to get me to the hospital.  So I called a good friend who lived near, Sonja, and asked if she would come stay with the girls, and could I borrow her car?  She was agreeable to both.

So we made the tradeoff, and off I went to Wilford Hall.  As promised, they took me right in, and gave me some medicine that fixed me up, indeed.  I waited a bit to make sure I was okay, then went out to Sonja’s car to go home.

I opened the driver’s door, and took my first look in her car.  And what to my surprise did I see?  THE BACK SEAT WAS MISSING!!

WHAT??? (mouth hanging wide open at this point)

THE BACK SEAT WAS MISSING??!!

Who in the world would STEAL the back seat out of a car?

So I ran back inside the hospital and called Sonja at my house (remember – waaayyy before cell phones at that time!).  When I breathlessly explained the situation, Sonja began to laugh and laugh and laugh.  When she could finally catch her breath, she said, “Judy, come on home.  We’re having the back seat re-upholstered!”

Well, it’s funny now, but I felt like a first-class-idiot!  She assured me that I wasn’t, and thanked me for the best laugh she’d had in a long time!  I’m sure her husband did, as well, when she told him!

And I hope you did, too.  It’s so much fun to look back on those times of our life and see them fondly.
