Two things first of all:

1)        Fred and I really enjoy Disney – all things Disney.

2)        We like to notice little “touches” of things while at Disney.

Okay, that’s out of the way.  Now…on January 25, 2017, I wrote a blog titled “Tied in Knots” and the entire blog was written because I had seen the little boats at Disney Springs tie up to the cleat at the dock.  I still get a chuckle over that every time we are at Disney Springs and ride the boat from one dock (West Side/Marketplace/The Landing) to another.  (Just for your information, Downtown Disney is now known as Disney Springs.  I don’t know why they changed the name – perhaps “Disney Springs” rolls off the tongue easier than “Downtown Disney” does.  Whatever…) 

We were walking around Disney Springs recently and it occurred to me that lot of the door “handles” on the newer stores there have interesting and unique handles.  Now, we had noticed these before, but it didn’t occur to us until just that moment that my readers might also enjoy seeing those door handles.  And yes, one set of those door handles are cleats!  And just for information purposes, most of the stores I have photographed for this posting, are NOT Disney – they are just on Disney property.  Some of the names are quite recognizable, but others are not – at least not to either Fred or me.

Therefore, we’ve taken pictures of the ones that interest us the most, and present them to you now. These are some of the little “touches” at Disney that we enjoy.  We hope you do, as well.

The Art of Shaving is a unique store dealing with everything “shaving.”

We were amused to see the door handles are “barber poles”, as well as the barber pole off to the side – even if it is not red/white/and blue.

Tommy Bahama is fairly well known.  All types of clothing.

Melissa is an unknown brand name to us, but love the “M” of the door handles.  But both doors must be closed to see the rounded “M”

Most people are familiar with Kate Spade, for one reason or another…

While the door handles aren’t unique, the “spade” is everywhere!

When we were taking the daily newspaper, my favorite part was the “funny papers” or the comics.  I guess that shows just what a simple mind I have.  But that would get my day off to a funny start.

Consequently, when something hit me especially funny – or nostalgic – I would cut out that particular piece and save it for future enjoyment.

As I said previously, we don’t take the newspaper anymore, so I don’t know whether or not cartoons – such as today’s posting – are still out there and being published.  But this one caught my funny bone and I cut it out.

He’s not called “the born loser” without reason!  As I recall, he kept setting himself up for falls, just like this one.  Such subtle humor – but I really got a good laugh out of it.  I hope you do, as well.

As I mentioned last time, from time-to-time I go through some of my “stuff” – mostly papers – and run across some things that I’ve saved for one reason or another.  That happened recently, while I was searching for a particular photo I wanted to use in one of my postings.

In searching, I came upon this article written by Erma Bombeck.  She always wrote such fun and funny things.  Obviously this one was written about teenagers, and I must have saved it because I had teenagers at the time.  In any case, I thought it was funny – and appropriate – enough to save.

Time to Reboot

From time-to-time I go through some of my “stuff”  –  mostly papers – and run across some things that I’ve saved for one reason or another.  That happened recently, while I was searching for a particular photo I wanted to use in one of my postings.

So I hope to treat my readers to some humor to start their work week.

This week, I found this cartoon from Shoe.  We don’t take the daily or weekly newspapers anymore, so I don’t know whether or not Shoe is still appearing in the funny papers.  According to the date on it, it appeared in 1993.  But this one seemed to “hit the spot” with me, and a lot of computer users, I’m sure.

I remember when our oldest daughter, Karen, was in high school, and taking a computer class.  She would frequently spout off with:  THIS THING HATES ME!!

NAME THAT TUNE

I’ve mentioned before that shortly after we moved to Florida, we joined the church where we now worship.  And within six months of that time, I became the church secretary.

Within a year, two of our pastors had left for other churches – our Minister of Music and our Youth Pastor.  Our current Minister of Music, Rick, came to us within a year of that time.

One day he came to me with an idea of having the congregation “vote on” or suggest their top 10 favorite hymns, and we would present the “winners” one Sunday at a time, for 10 Sundays.  He would give the background of the hymn, i.e. when it was written, who wrote it, if there was any kind of story or history behind the writing or composing of that hymn, and then give the title of the hymn, and we would sing it.

And so we put together an insert to the bulletin for several Sundays, asking the congregation to give us their favorite hymn titles.  Rick then compiled the list of those hymns submitted, and came up with the final 10 favorites.  The list of favorites was quite extensive.

And then he gave me a threat – “If you tell ANYONE what the favorites are, I will do you bodily harm!!”  And then we both laughed.  But it gave me a good reason to NOT tell anyone what the finalists were.  And I did have several people ask me if I knew what the top 10 were.  Of course!  I said.  But Rick threatened me with bodily harm if I spilled the beans!

I found it fun, and the congregation thoroughly enjoyed finding out, Sunday by Sunday, something about the hymns we were singing.  That always seems to mean more when we sing a song, and know the history behind it.  And Rick always told the history of the hymn before he announced the title. 

I must admit that I don’t remember in what order those hymns were, but Rick started with number 10, and worked his way up to number one – one each Sunday.

That final Sunday was full of suspense.  And Rick really did it up right.  He began with, “the Number One Hymn chosen by most of you…well, could it be Jesus Loves Me?”  I heard a collective “ohh” from the congregation.  

“Or could it be How Great Thou Art?”  Another collective “ohh” from the congregation.

But then he said. “Or could it be Amazing Grace?”  The collective “ohh” was louder this time.  And then he began telling the story/history of a song, and finally said, “Yes, it is Amazing Grace.”  I could almost hear a collective chuckle from the congregation.  

It was a fun – and informative – time for our congregation.  So many of the songs we sing are just songs we sing.  This gave us some background into how and why composers and song-writers do what they do.  The inspiration behind the songs we do sing.  It really brings meaning to the music we sing.

I can hardly believe that another year has passed by – and it’s 2020 already!!  Remember all the “hoopla” that was made over Y2K (year 2000)?  None of that came to pass, and now it is 20 years past that!!  Amazing.  My life is whizzing by!  And this year marks 20 years since I was diagnosed with breast cancer.  WOW!

In thinking of the new year, many random thoughts have come to my mind.  I would like to share some of them.

I wrote a post on December 29, 2013 (Memories of New Years Past) about the “watchnight” service that was held each New Year’s Eve at my home church in Albuquerque, New Mexico.  Lovely memory of home.

Another memory of New Year’s Eve watchnight service was when Fred and I were in Wiesbaden, Germany.  That New Year’s Eve, the little church we were in was having a watchnight service, and they wanted to do a skit.  They needed an “old year” grownup, and a “new year” young child.  They asked Fred to be the old year, and since our Karen was small, they thought she would be good for the “new year” child.  Fred had a fake white beard and wig to wear.  So as not to frighten Karen, we had Fred dress up in the wig and beard and then present himself to her.  She took one look at him and said, “Hi Daddy.”  So much for the disguise!  We were quite amused.  

Our church in Seaford, Virginia always had some type of watchnight service.  It wasn’t as elaborate as the one in Albuquerque – I don’t remember having a dinner or movie or games or anything.  But we did gather and prayed, shared thoughts for the new year, and frequently had the Lord’s Supper, or communion, as some call it.  Another sweet memory.  I do remember that the year Karen and Brian married (on December 30), that as we were sharing thoughts, I shared that I would have to learn to keep my mouth shut and be a good mother-in-law!

And that brings us to Orlando, Florida, where we now live. 

Because Fred and I have had such good memories of watchnight services throughout our lives, we wanted to have a service at our current church.  We really thought most churches have a service of some sort, so the first year we were in our church here, we suggested to the pastor that the church have a watchnight service.  He wasn’t very enthusiastic about it, saying they had never had one before, but if we wanted to sponsor it, he approved.  And so we spread the word, that the church would have a watchnight service, beginning at 10:30 p.m. on that New Year’s Eve.  We arrived at the church at about 10:15 p.m. and got the church ready for the service.  And we waited….and we waited….and we waited….11:00 p.m. came and went…..11:30 p.m. came and went.  And not one other person arrived.  So we went home.  And we’ve not attempted to have another watchnight service in this church since.  In a way, that hurts our hearts a bit, but then, we are now older, and enjoy being at home – and usually in bed asleep – when the clock hits 12:00 midnight each New Year.

I hope and pray that your new year is healthy and prosperous and full of the JOY OF THE LORD!

As I mentioned before, I recently went through some of my stuff – papers, mostly – and I found some interesting things that sparked my interest.  Since Ann Landers has been dead for quite a while, this is a VERY old clipping.  However, what it represents is something that we all could relate to.  Hope you enjoy it:

Number three is something that this new generation needs to really work on.  I haven’t seen much “self-discipline” going on.  It is truly a “me” generation, and it hurts my heart to see it.

And Number four is an amazing thing to think about.  Not just for self-discipline, but as an act of love toward your spouse.  I think most of us are far too self-absorbed to do that too often.  But I can assure you that it is one of the most wonderful things anyone can do for their marriage.  But that is also a Biblical teaching – think of others before yourself.   Of course, the Biblical teaching is to focus on God first, and all things just fall into place.  Amazing how that works…

When our girls were old enough to date, we never let them leave the house without telling them that we loved them – and gave them a hug and kiss to go with it.  Janet’s boyfriend at the time, couldn’t understand that, and asked why we did it.  Every.  Single.  Time.  She explained that we loved her and wanted safety for her and for her to know how much we loved her.  He eventually stated that he wanted HIS children to have that, as well. WOW!  Who would have thought just a hug and kiss and a “I love you” would touch his heart like that?

And just remember number 12 in an argument:  if YOU are doing most of the talking – you are probably in the wrong!  Ouch!  Time to shut up and let the other one state their case, hmm?

Tips For Christmas

PREFACE:  I posted this in December, 2017.  As I re-read it, I thought how fitting it is for the season, and thought I would re-post it again.  It is quite timely, and I thought it might be something we all need to remember about Christmas and all the preparations we make for the holiday..  Enjoy!

I must admit – I enjoy spending time on FaceBook.  Okay…I spend too MUCH time on fb!  But I have found some good recipes along the way, as well as some profound thoughts and ideas.  

I know that Christmas for 2017 is passed [it was when I posted this the first time], but this “newspaper” clipping was presented on fb recently, and I thought it might be something you – and I – might like to cut out, paste on the refrigerator door, and apply to Christmas 2018 [or 2019 in this case].

As I mentioned last time, I recently went through some of my stuff – papers, mostly – and I found some interesting things that sparked my interest.  Obviously this one sparked my interest some time ago, because I cut out this clipping.  I got a good laugh out of most of these.  See what you think:

I especially like the first one – “The size of your foot has very little to do with your ability to get it into your mouth.”  Oh my…how many times have I done just that??!!  Far too many, that’s for sure.  James 1:26 in the Bible tells us to keep a tight rein on our tongues.  I’m old enough that you would think I would have a good handle on that, but I seem to keep putting my foot in my mouth all the time!

Number three is a good follow-on to number one, don’t you think?

Remember…your tongue is in a wet place and likely to slip!

Number eight is certainly one to remember.  If you fall down, keep getting up!  And you can fall down in many ways – not just physically.  You can fall down mentally, emotionally, spiritually…any number of ways.  Keep on getting up – one more time!

And number 10 is one I should really listen to.  That bathroom scale is the bane of my existence!  Of course, I don’t have to step up on it – but it’s like a magnet to me.  I just MUST see if I’ve lost any weight since yesterday!  Any of you out there like that?  Frustrating, isn’t it?

I Love to Read!

I love to read.  I REALLY love to read.  I read a lot.  Mostly fiction…some suspense…some mystery…with a bit of romance thrown in.  Since I’ve retired from the working scene, I spend a lot of time in my glider, reading.  Since I purchased my Kindle e-reader,

I read even more.  That little machine holds 3,000 books – certainly more than my house would hold!  I’ve tried to cut down on my purchases, and just re-read the ones I have and have enjoyed reading before.  It’s kind of like visiting with an old friend.

Recently, when going through some of my stuff – papers, mostly – I found the following Blondie cartoon, by Dean Young and Denis Lebrun.  It was a 2004 cartoon, so it’s been around quite a while.  But it describes me to a “T” – see what you think:

I’ve been known to read the first chapter of a book, and then the last chapter.  I like to know how it ends up, and if the characters end up together.  And then I go back to see how they get there.  I know…crazy, huh?

However, there was one book that I read that way, but when I gave the book to Karen to read (she had the same habit I did – first chapter/last chapter), I actually stapled the last chapter together so she couldn’t find out the solution before reading the entire book.  To say she was furious with me, is quite an understatement!   I even told her that if she unstapled that chapter and re-stapled it, I would be able to tell, as the staple “holes” wouldn’t line up.

But you see, it was an Agatha Christie mystery, titled And Then There Were None (also published as Ten Little Indians.)

And if you read the book, and know beforehand how it turns out, that really ruins the mystery!  After Karen finally read the story, she was glad that I had stapled the last chapter, and she had to wait to find out “who done it.”  But she was still furious with me.

One book that I love to read – that I don’t need to read the “last chapter” is the Bible.

Except for a couple of the books (Leviticus and Numbers – dealing with genealogies and numbers within the tribes), I find the scriptures fascinating.  I’ve found ways to praise God in those scriptures.  I’ve found ways to live as God would have me live and love and deal with what comes my way.  I love the adventures that take place.  I’m amazed at the battles the LORD fights and wins.  I love that He fights my battles for me, if I just step aside and let Him handle it.  Oh wow…I just love the scriptures!

So, all-in-all – I just LOVE TO READ!
