I really love Christmas!  All the brisk weather (in the colder climes), the Christmas trees and wreaths.  The decorations.  But especially the music.  It’s so much fun to hear and sing – both sacred and secular.  It’s such a special time of year.

But for me – and all of Christianity – Easter is the very, VERY best!  Of course, Christmas had to come first – to bring the Christ Child into this world.  But Easter brings us eternal life…and that beats the socks off a fun, cute song any day!

The songs associated with Easter are so exciting – and uplifting – and inspiring – and so full of hope and promise (and by-the-way – hope in scripture means absolute assurance!).  They tell of Christ’s death, yes, but also of that glorious moment when HE AROSE!  Can you imagine it?  God’s power is so tremendously great that He actually raised Jesus from death back into life!  Amazing!!  It’s so easy to just say…He arose.  But just think of it – He actually rose FROM THE DEAD BACK TO LIFE!  That never happened to anyone else, that didn’t physically die again.  Our Savior lives again and still, and forever.

There’s a lot of anti-Christian stuff going on right now, that borders on persecution.  Yes, I know – I really haven’t a clue what true persecution is like.  But this is the most anti-Christian attitude in this country that I’ve ever felt.  And it doesn’t feel good.

Seems like every Easter there is something that happens to a church here or there that actually backfires on the perpetrators.  For instance, when we lived in Panama City, Florida back in the 1970’s, there was a Lutheran church who put up a “tomb/cave” on their front lawn every Easter.  They would have a “stone” rolled across the front, that on Easter morning was “rolled away” to reveal the open/empty tomb.  One year, the whole thing disappeared!  Turns out, some teenagers, on a dare, took it away.  So, instead of harming the message – the newspaper got a hold of the story – took pictures and all – and it made the front page news! Backfire, see?

And then when we lived in a small town in Virginia, our church had put up some sort of display on our front lawn – and some of the “soldiers” disappeared.  Same thing – the city newspaper (and possibly the TV stations in town) got wind of the disappearance, and interviewed the Pastor about it.  Again, it made the headlines and news stories.  The culprits were found and the soldiers returned.  Another backfire.

All that to say that I am convinced that there is still a remnant of believers in this country, and that God will honor those who still trust Him.  What is done in the dark will be brought to light – and God’s name will be glorified.

HE IS RISEN!   HE IS RISEN, INDEED!

Palm Sunday 2023

Today is Palm Sunday, 2023.  So much has been written about Easter Sunday – and it deserves all the accolades written about it.  Easter to the Christian is the foundation of our faith in Jesus as our Lord and Savior.

But not much get written about Palm Sunday.  Yes, it’s a “lead-in” to Easter, but in its own right is so much more.  But we must understand that Palm Sunday was the preparation for the torture, crucifixion, death and burial of our Lord.  And all of that HAD to happen in order to secure our salvation.  Yes, God the Father sent Jesus to earth to die for the human race, but one thing that isn’t told very often, is that Jesus willingly GAVE UP His life – not just at the command of the Father, but of His own free will.  

The Palm Sunday story is told in John 12, verses 1-36 (NIV).  I have taken bits and pieces from that passage to show just what Palm Sunday means.  I encourage you to read the entire chapter:

….Six days before the Passover, Jesus came to Bethany, where Lazarus lived, whom Jesus had raised from the dead. Here a dinner was given in Jesus’ honor. Martha served, while Lazarus was among those reclining at the table with Him.  Then Mary took about a pint of pure nard, an expensive perfume; she poured it on Jesus’ feet and wiped His feet with her hair. And the house was filled with the fragrance of the perfume.

,,,, “It was intended that she should save this perfume for the day of My burial.”

….Meanwhile a large crowd of Jews found out that Jesus was there and came, not only because of Him but also to see Lazarus, whom He had raised from the dead.  So the chief priests made plans to kill Lazarus as well, for on account of him many of the Jews were going over to Jesus and believing in him.

….The next day the great crowd that had come for the festival heard that Jesus was on His way to Jerusalem. They took palm branches and went out to meet Him, shouting,

        “Hosanna!”

        “Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord!”

        “Blessed is the king of Israel!”

        Jesus found a young donkey and sat on it

…. Now the crowd that was with Him when He called Lazarus from the tomb and raised him from the dead continued to spread the word.  Many people, because they had heard that He had performed this sign, went out to meet Him. So the Pharisees said to one another, “See, this is getting us nowhere. Look how the whole world has gone after Him!”

 ….Jesus replied, “The hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified. Very truly I tell you, unless a kernel of wheat falls to the ground and dies, it remains only a single seed. But if it dies, it produces many seeds.  Anyone who loves their life will lose it, while anyone who hates their life in this world will keep it for eternal life.  Whoever serves Me must follow Me; and where I am, My servant also will be. My Father will honor the one who serves Me.

Jesus, the Perfect Lamb of God willingly gave up His life so that we – all of humankind who believe on Him – could spent eternity with Him in Heaven.  I am so thankful that I am counted in that group who will spend eternity praising God.  May you also belong in that group. 

That is my prayer this Palm Sunday, Good Friday, and Easter morning.

The Bible Story Lady-In Person

In my post of January 8, 2023, I mentioned my time in Dallas, Texas, my birthplace.  In thinking about the First Baptist Church of Dallas, I also mentioned Ms. Bertha Mills, the nursery worker who would take me on her lap and read a story.  I have vague memories of that.  My brother Bill says he really doesn’t remember that.

She wrote down some of her stories and published them in book form.  It was published by The Story Book Press out of Dallas, Texas, and copyrighted in 1948.

I contacted First Baptist Church of Dallas, and asked about any more information on Ms. Bertha they could give me.  Ruth Turner, the Director of the Truett Memorial Library for the church replied to my request.  She gave her permission to use any/all of the information she sent about Ms. Bertha.

Ms. Bertha died January 12, 1964.  The following article was in FBC’s weekly “Reminder” by the pastor, Dr. Criswell.

Last week we laid to rest in the arms of Jesus our sweet Miss Bertha Mills.  The record of her ministry among little children in this First Baptist Church of Dallas is nothing less than phenomenal.  It covers a full half century….will be preparing a beautiful memorial for this worthy and noble teacher….write a tribute in verse that would say better than we could in prose our tenderest thanksgiving for Bertha Mills.  It is so true to the spirit of this noble Nursery Leader.“

As I’ve said before, she was a much-loved lady in the church.  If I can figure out the copyright laws concerning her stories, and it is okay, then I will share her stories with my readers.  They are short, but very entertaining – to both children and adults. 

For now, this is all about Ms. Bertha.

Ah……Spring Time

I  have a hard time deciding which is my favorite season of the year. I really love Spring. All the trees leafing out……..those with blossoms..blossoming …..all the flowers popping up their heads, full of color and fragrance. Just knowing the earth is coming back to life. The temperatures are mild with very low humidity – I really like that, since I grew up in Albuquerque, New Mexico, where the humidity is practically non-existent. There are so many days here where we can open up the windows and doors and let all that fresh air flow through the house.

However, I also enjoy the Fall. Here in Florida, Fall seems to take a bit longer than in other places, but it does get here eventually. Once again, the humidity takes a dip, we can open up the house, and the living is great. I almost enjoy Fall more than Spring, simply because I know it will be months and months before the humidity hits us in the face again.

But Spring brings its own neat stuff. One of our favorite things to do – especially at Disney and especially at EPCOT, is to be on the lookout for new baby ducks. We’ve seen them swimming in the ponds quite often, so we look there. Occasionally we see them following-the-leader (momma duck) along some of the walkways.

They are just so CUTE! Just the other day we saw cars stopped along the roadway, to let the momma duck and her little ducklings make it safely across the street. So I guess we aren’t the only ones who enjoy that sight.

We were at SeaWorld recently, and we saw three sets of Spoonbill wading birds in their respective nests in one tree. We assumed there were either eggs or newly hatched babies in the nests, but the nests were too high in the tree for us to see.

Another favorite thing is for us to see the Sandhill Cranes with their babies. Those little fuzzballs really aren’t so little! And we especially get excited when we see mom, dad, and TWIN fuzzballs! Adorable!

As I said, Springtime is just the time for the earth – and life – to come back into its own. It’s such a joy to watch.

The Bearded Barbet

The Bearded Barbet – reblog  

We have lived in Central Florida since 1995 – our retirement dream.  We had originally thought we would retire here and “work” at Disney, doing something mundane, so we could see the theme parks to our heart’s content.  Well, it didn’t work out quite like that.  Within four months we had found the church where we felt God wanted us to be members, and so we joined it.

Within another six months – much to my surprise! – I became the Church Secretary.  Fred wasn’t too sure about turning in my application for the vacant position, but it just “felt right” to me, so I did.  And was hired (I was Church Secretary for nearly nine years).  I think it helped that I was an older woman, and my last position had been a Financial Secretary, and had learned to keep my mouth shut.  Financial and pastoral stuff is just something one doesn’t blab about.  Within another nine months, Fred was the Church Administrator.  It was nice working together, and we made the distinction of working WITH each other – neither of us working FOR the other!  Even with our desks in the same room, we just worked together, as it should be.

In spite of all that “work” stuff, we found time to go to Disney, SeaWorld, and Universal Studios.  We especially enjoyed going to SeaWorld after a stressful day at work.

 It just seemed like it was more restful there – not as frantic a pace as at Disney or Universal.  Perhaps it was the animals…I don’t know.  I just know that we enjoyed it and felt refreshed after spending a few hours at that theme park.

After we had been going to SeaWorld for a few years, we happened to go around a corner that we didn’t usually go around – and saw a bird “cage” along side one of the buildings.  We heard a strange sound coming from there, and stopped to see.  Inside the large cage were two of the most unusual birds we had ever seen!  And the sound was a raspy croak – called a “growling scrawk”!  WOW!

 What were these birds??!!  The sign said “Bearded Barbet” – have you ever heard of that?  They, along with Toucans are mainly from tropical West Africa.

I rubbed my finger along the wire mesh, and one of them hopped right over to the metal frame, and took a good look at my finger.  The mesh was tight enough that I couldn’t be bitten – and it’s a good thing!  Look at that beak!!  But it did try to “peck” at my finger.  It scrawked at me a few times, before it flew back to its perch.

Every time we went to SeaWorld after that, we would make sure we stopped to see the Bearded Barbet, and were thrilled each time.

Imagine our disappointment when we discovered that they weren’t there any more – and had been replaced by Australian Kookaburras.  Nothing wrong with Kookaburras, but they just weren’t the Bearded Barbet!

Ah – the wonders of God’s world.  They never cease to amaze me!

Church-Maybe Not

Have you been watching the news the past few weeks?  God’s revival is breaking out just everywhere!  

It started on the small college campus of Asbury University in Wilmore, Kentucky.

Just amazing – God’s Holy Spirit has filled that campus and it’s students to overflowing.  Students were missing classes because they felt they needed to be in the chapel praising God and worshiping Him.  It became so large that campus officials had to limit it to only those on campus – they had to find other places for the worship to take place for all those descending upon Asbury.  Amazing!

One thing that surprised – and somehow pleased – me was when some prominent names in the Christian community – preachers and musicians – called the officials of Asbury, wanting to “lend their services:” 

They are politely, but firmly, being told: You can come, like anyone else. And if you can find a seat at the back of the auditorium, you’re welcome to worship with us. But we don’t want church as usual. Not the agendas. Not the programs. Not the showboating. The simple worship and meeting will continue to be led by a humble group of students, under the direction of the Holy Spirit.

Basically, the response has been: Don’t try to hi-jack this sovereign move of God, and make it about you.

This is about people meeting God…nothing more and nothing less.  In another comment I have seen, it was said that true revival doesn’t start with ecstasy – it starts with tears.  The beginning of this revival started with repentance.

And now I see that this revival has spread to Texas A&M.

But one aMAZing aspect of this – there is country-wide revival in Uganda!  Thousands are being saved daily.  

“Wow! There is a NATIONWIDE REVIVAL that has broke out in UGANDA.”

“From the four corners of this nation, God is setting the place on fire with His presence. It’s hard to describe what we are witnessing here. Close to 1,000 souls saved this week. Each trip in, it builds. Uganda4Jesus crusades may be in August. However, now is the hour for Uganda.”

You know, this country (USA) and indeed this whole world has begun to think and feel like God is just shoved aside.  And that hurts my heart.  We have NEEDED a revival for so very long – it is happening in spite of what our national and world leaders are trying to convince us where we are heading.  And Thank God for that!  

I have, for many years, felt there is a remnant of God’s people in this country that God will honor.  But we are being told that the majority of U.S. citizens are profoundly anti-God.  And I just don’t believe it – don’t want to believe it.

And what pleases me most, I think, about this revival that started in Asbury, is that it is the young people – the students – who have awakened to the Holy Spirit and His leading.  It’s not just us older folks who feel God’s presence – it’s the young ones!  So many people who have been interviewed at Asbury and other places, say that the “manifest Presence” of God simply permeates the meetings.  Praise God for that!

May God’s manifest Presence continue to fill our hearts and our land and bring this country to its knees in prayer to Him.

Church is Hard

As I have mentioned in previous musings, I am on facebook quite a bit.  I enjoy the jokes and funny stories, and try to stay away from political stuff.  Not always successful with that, but I do try.

In any case, a friend posted something recently titled “Church is Hard.”   I really liked the piece, and asked her if I could use it in my blog post, and who was the author.  Apparently the author is unknown, so I just present it here for your contemplation.

Church is hard for the person walking through the doors, afraid of judgement.

Church is hard for the pastor’s family, under the microscope of an entire body.

Church is hard for the prodigal soul returning home, broken and battered by the world.

Church is hard for the girl who looks like she has it all together, but doesn’t.

Church is hard for the couple who fought the entire ride to service.

Church is hard for the single mom, surrounded by couples holding hands, and seemingly perfect families.

Church is hard for the widow and widower with no invitation to lunch after service.

Church is hard for the deacon with an estranged child.

Church is hard for the person singing worship songs, overwhelmed by the weight of the

 lyrics.

Church is hard for the man insecure in his role as a leader.

Church is hard for the wife who longs to be led by a righteous man.

Church is hard for the nursery volunteer who desperately longs for a baby to love.

Church is hard for the single woman and single man, praying God brings them a mate.

Church is hard for the teenage girl, wearing a scarlet letter, ashamed of her mistakes.

Church is hard for the sinners.

Church is hard for me.

It’s hard because on the outside it all looks shiny and perfect. Sunday best in behavior and dress.

However, underneath those layers, you find a body of imperfect people, carnal souls, selfish motives.

But, here is the beauty of church—

Church isn’t a building, mentality, or expectation.

Church is a body.

Church is a group of sinners, saved by grace, living in fellowship as saints.

Church is a body of believers bound as brothers and sisters by an eternal love.

Church is a holy ground where sinners stand as equals before the Throne of Grace.

Church is a refuge for broken hearts and a training ground for mighty warriors.

Church is a converging of confrontation and invitation. Where sin is confronted and hearts are invited to seek restoration.

Church is a lesson in faith and trust.

Church is a bearer of burdens and a giver of hope.

Church is a family. A family coming together, setting aside differences, forgetting past mistakes, rejoicing in the smallest of victories.

Church, the body, and the circle of sinners-turned-saints, is where He resides, and if we ask, He is faithful to come.

So even on the hard days at church—

I’ll remember, He has never failed to meet me there.

Church is a body, a family, a place to love God and love others through our struggles!

I love MY church!!

Neither Fred nor I can remember 2021’s Christmas Tree Trail – whether or not it was up.  However, this past year (2022) we noticed that the “Trail” was not in its usual place.  But….the trees were scattered throughout Disney Springs, and had signposts with each one.  Disney Springs called it “Christmas Tree Stroll 2022.”

They had produced a “brochure” or “map” to take you around the area to find the trees.  Here’s the cover of the map:

Here’s the inside of the brochure – sorry it’s not a very good panoramic stitch, but gives you a general idea of what it looks like.  Wherever there is a Christmas “tree,” there was a sticker available for that tree.  As you can see, we didn’t finish the round, but it was fun doing what we did.

We also noticed that Disney had added some trees, as well.  Such as this one:

Disney has launched a new ship – the Disney Wish.  And so, they made a “tree” for it.

After moving to Central Florida, she served as a church secretary for nearly nine years.Her main hobby at this point in time is scanning pictures and 35mm slides into the computer. She also enjoys scrapbooking.She and her husband have two married daughters and four grandchildren, including grandtwins as well as a great-grandson and a great-granddaughter. She and her husband enjoy the Disney parks as often as possible.

These are just a few of the trees.  I will post more next time.  We had such fun walking through Disney’s Christmas Tree Trail.  The detail on each tree was truly amazing!

Judy is living in Central Florida with her retired U.S. Air Force husband of 50+ years. Born in Dallas, Texas, she grew up in the Southwestern United States.She met her husband at their church, where he was attending the university in her town. After college and seminary, he entered the Air Force, and their adventures began.They lived in eight of our United States, and spent six years in Europe, where their oldest daughter was born. She was a stay-at-home mom for many years .

  Judy has always been involved with music, both playing the piano and singing. Always interested in exercise, she was an aerobic dancing instructor, as well as a piano teacher for many years, and continues to faithfully exercise at home.
