Consider these three steps before getting angry

Consider these three steps before getting angry.

Road rage is on the rise. It’s heating up. And it’s fanning the flame of stress. Even when car keys are put away, the tension remains.

This might be the reason. Studies show that irate drivers have a reason for that behavior. It has nothing to do with the highway, but everything to do with the heart.

Way before drivers sit behind the wheel, stress, tension, discouragement and fear have already settled way deep inside. And when someone cuts them off on the road, Look out! All those negative emotions come tumbling out. The result? Murmuring under the breath. Shooting such dirty looks so hard they cracked the windshield. And oops, our kids better not see that gesture. They’re learning first-hand how anger is displayed.

And what does anger do? It feeds ulcers and brings on headaches that ruin our day. The same thing happens when on the road of life. Glitches pushes us into the ditch of unhappiness and we’re stuck in the mud of discontentment.

Let’s start over. Before beginning the trip through the events of the day, consider these three stop signs:

Stop sign No. 1. Love the unlovable.

Huh? Lord, do you see those crazy drivers on the road? And those who wronged us so deeply? Love them? Don’t think so.

Hard? No, it’s not hard. It’s impossible to love those who cut you off, make illegal, dangerous turns and put you and your family in danger. And how about others who inflict emotional wounds? We want to hang them, not love them.

God hears that complaint. And with patience only He has, He still says: “You have heard that it was said, ‘Love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’ But I tell you: Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, that you may be sons of your Father in heaven. If you love those who love you, what reward will you get?” (Matthew 5:44 and 46).

Recently, a man was interviewed after his imprisonment and torture because of His Christian beliefs. As he was beaten, he had a prayer, “Lord, I don’t want to be in two prisons—this one and the prison of anger and resentment. Help me to love those who are torturing me.”

Eventually, as he walked out of that prison, wounded and broken, he carried the power of forgiveness that restored him, healed his wounds and made him strong enough to carry on with his ministry.

Stop Sign No. 2. The power of our words.

Did you ever hear the boomerang power of our words? The curses we speak toward others come right back to us with tension into our own muscles. Ranting about other’s mistakes fuel our own stress. Rage toward others comes back to us with added negativity. And with an angry attitude out of control, we bring peace to a screeching halt.

“Like a city whose walls are broken down is a man who lacks self-control” (Proverbs 25:38).

“Better a patient man than a warrior, a man who controls his temper than one who takes a city” (Proverbs 16:32).

In self-control, there’s power. In self-restraint, there’s strength and there’s health because… “Gracious words are like a honeycomb, sweetness to the soul and health to the body” (Proverbs 16:24).

Choosing to live healthier, we embrace a different approach. When others don’t deserve, we dish out kindness. When others don’t care, we still do. And when others bring us down, we stand on the power of God.

Stop sign No. 3. Humility brings freedom.

Blushing a bit, I confess. Foolishly thinking I possess more wisdom and have more experience; I’ve elbowed my way in the crowd and declared my thoughts. Happy the day when God spoke to me and said, “Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit, but in humility consider others better than yourselves” (Philippians 2:3).

We want to do that, we really do. We desire to be humble, honorable. But how can someone who is so wrong, so foolish, so outrageous in their actions be better than ourselves?

Thinking they’re not, we prepare our attack, stand in position, make our point. Speak our mind and assert our position.

But that’s when God asserts His own position, calling us to have a gentle spirit, a humble attitude and loving in our response.

Considering others better than ourselves requires humility in our approach, wisdom for our thoughts, and obedience to God’s commandments. In Matthew 22 36, Jesus was asked, “Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law?” Jesus replied: “’Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself’” (Matthew 22:36-39).

Loving others no matter what isn’t a sign of weakness. Rather, it’s a display of a valiant, courageous warrior holding the flag of triumphant victory.

Who has wronged you today and needs your loving attitude?

Let’s Pray

Father, thank You for showing me a way out of angry thoughts. I praise for the path you showed me to a calmer life and a loving approach to others. In Jesus name.

Who has wronged you today and needs your loving attitude?

Three Steps to Have Your Prayers Answered

2 Nov

Walking by Faith, Not by Sight

Reblogged November 1, 2019

Did anyone tell you there’s no right or wrong way to pray? They’re correct. But there is a wrong sense of conviction as we pray. When we ask God for blessings, we often use a mousy attitude. We request limited blessings. And imagine only what our human mind can hold.

But when we change the way we pray, the results are different. Putting pride aside, our prayers need to be bold, sure, and expectant.

I tried that. Recently, in my prayer time, I asked the Lord to grant me favor on this particular day. Not sure what that favor would be, I didn’t focus on the specific blessing. Instead, I asked, with an expectant spirit and an anticipating heart.

Later that day, my mom and I stopped at a Christian bookstore. We walked in and the woman behind the counter recognized me. And in an angelic voice said, “A group in my church is doing the Bible study in your book.”

My book? Among all those popular books by world-known authors, her church chose my book? I did a cartwheel in my head and thanked God for that sweet encouragement.

You may not be looking for your books to be read. But instead, you need huge solutions. No matter what the request, here are three steps to pray more effectively.

No. 1: We discard doubt and express the authority we have in Jesus.

The words can be few, but the faith has to be deep.

John and Peter show us the simplicity of a powerful prayer. They encountered a man crippled from birth who begged for money.

“Then Peter said, ‘Silver or gold I do not have, but what I have I give you. In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, walk.’ Taking him by the right hand, he helped him up, and instantly the man’s feet and ankles became strong. He jumped to his feet and began to walk” (Acts 3:6-8).

No. 2: Never stop declaring what God will do.

Persistence and perseverance are the vehicle to answers. Keep on knocking, expectantly and the door will open.

The reason we never stop is because God said, “You don’t have because you do not ask God” (James 4:2b)

No. 3. Expect the best God has for you.

Be prepared for a greater answer. And declare in advance praises for what God has prepared, thanking Him in advance for the gifts He has stored in the warehouse of His love. He’s willing, ready and longing to make the delivery according to His schedule.

Here’s His promise:

“Which of you, if his son asks for bread, will give him a stone? Or if he asks for a fish, will give him a snake? If you, then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give good gifts to those who ask him!” (Matthew 7:7-11).

God, who created the universes and who knit us together in our mother’s womb, knows what we need. He’s aware of we lack. He observes our desires and knows what we desire at this moment. He knows what your heart longs for as you read these lines. And He sees the tears that wet your pillow.

That’s why He repeats His promise, “When the time is right, I, the Lord, will make it happen” (Isaiah 60:22).

And as He prepares His answer, He’s curling His finger calling you to step into His will as you place your prayers before Him, with certainty of His answer and sure of His timing.

Let’s Pray

Father, thank you for the boldness you gave me to come before You and express my requests. With patience I will wait and with hope I will praise you. In Jesus name.

What changes do you need to make as you pray?

Janet

You’re Not Alone

26 Oct

Walking by Faith, Not by Sight

Janet Perez Eckles

Reblogged October 26, 2019

My granddaughter blew her birthday candles out on her 12th birthday. It seems like only yesterday when fear attacked me. At three months, she was hospitalized for ailments that puzzled doctors.

They ordered tests and more tests, but no answers. We paced back and forth from worry, then prayer, then back to apprehension, then faith. Then once again, worry came back.

Until…

Have you ever traveled through that merry-go-round of emotions? You know, the kind where you’re sure of your faith, you have God’s Word hidden in your heart, you’ve shared it with others over and over again, and you’ve applied it diligently, too.

But when a loved one is being threatened in any way, all wisdom woven together in your soul begins to unravel. Your mind knows, but it’s not in sync with what burns in your heart.

Until…until, God, in His awesome wisdom nudges you in the right track. He did that for me, in a strange way—through this story:

The legend of the Cherokee Indian youth’s rite of passage.

His father takes him into the forest, blindfolds him, and leaves him alone. He is required to sit on a stump the whole night and not remove the blindfold until the rays of the morning sun shine through it. He cannot cry out for help to anyone.

Once he survives the night, he is a MAN. He cannot tell the other boys of this experience because each lad must come into manhood on his own.

The boy is naturally terrified. He can hear all kinds of noises. Wild beasts must surely be all around him. Maybe even some human might do him harm. The wind blew the grass and earth, and shook his stump, but he sat stoically, never removing the blindfold. It would be the only way he could become a man!

Finally, after a horrific night, the sun appeared and he removed his blindfold. It was then that he discovered his father sitting on the stump next to him. He had been at watch the entire night, protecting his son from harm.

With heart pulsating, I, too, sat on the stump, in the darkness trembling at the possibilities I could not see, imagining the worst regarding my grandchild. Foolish, right? God was beside me and her as well.

And He’s with you too, no matter what you face.

Though not by choice, you’re on that stump of life, there you are, shaking. Fear came because of bad news or unexpectedly life turned upside down and sleepless nights are long.

But during the night, when you feel alone in the darkness of pain, God is beside you. He’s watching your worry that has no reason, your fear that has no merit, and your anxious thoughts that shouldn’t be there.

Time to remove the blindfold of doubt. When you do, you can rest in the reassurance that He’s with you during the night. And during the day, He’ll walk with you to a triumphant victory.

Who will take a stand for me against evildoers? Unless the LORD had given me help, I would soon have dwelt in the silence of death. When I said, “My foot is slipping,” your love, O LORD, supported me. When anxiety was great within me your consolation brought joy to my soul. (Psalm 93:16-19)

Let’s Pray

Father, thank You for the joy of knowing I’m not alone in my troubles. I’m not left to make all the decisions, or to figure it all out, I’m not abandoned or forgotten. Thank You for the reassurance that with You, I can endure anything. In Jesus name.

If you’re on a stump of life, feeling alone, will you trust in God’s presence?

Janet

How Does God Know My Fears?

12 Oct

Walking by Faith, Not by Sight

Reblogged October 12, 2019

“I can’t remember anything lately,” my friend said. “I think I’m losing my mind.”

Have you ever said that? Sometimes I’m tempted to think that getting older is a good excuse for all that begins to fail.

But the good news is that no matter how many years go by, there’s something that never fails, never loses its power or diminishes its impact; and that’s God’s promise that He knows you and me inside and out.

He knows you’re reading this. He’s aware of your thoughts, He observes your anxious moments and your days of sorrow.

God explains it here.

YOUR NAME

“Quite a thought isn’t it? Your name on God’s hand. Your name on God’s lips. Maybe you’ve seen your name in some special places. On an award or diploma…or maybe you’ve heard your name from some important people—a coach, a celebrity, a teacher. But to think that your name is on God’s hand and on God’s lips…my, could it be?” (Max Lucado)

I know you by name. “See, I have written your name on the palms of my hands” (Isaiah 49:16). You are that precious to Me. I care about every detail of your life. Start today by reading My Word: “Do not be afraid, for I have ransomed you. I have called you by name; you are mine. When you go through deep waters, I will be with you. When you go through rivers of difficulty, you will not drown. When you walk through the fire of oppression, you will not be burned up; the flames will not consume you” (Isaiah 43:1-2).

I see your tears. I know your thoughts. I have not forgotten your requests. When you call out My name, I am always available. “My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me” (John 10:27).

I know your name. You are not a number to Me, or a symbol, or someone lost among all the other people in this world. You belong to Me, and I know your name. Because we have such an intimate relationship, I will give you hidden treasures, riches stored in secret places, so that you may know that I am the Lord, the God of Israel, who summons you by name” (Isaiah 45:3).

(The above section entitled YOUR NAME is an excerpt from Carol Kent’s release, “He Holds My Hand.”

Let’s Pray

Father, in my moments of heartache, I know You hold my hand and in Your hand is my name engraved. Thank You for knowing me so personally and intimately. You know my deepest secrets and my constant worry and each longing. Thank You for knowing how to resolve it all. In Jesus’ name.

How will your outlook change, knowing God is aware of every detail?

The Secret to Live a Happy Life

5 Oct

Walking by Faith, Not by Sight

Janet Perez Eckles

Reblogged October 5 2019

October 4, 2019

Looking for happiness in the wrong places?

The answer is in this true story that comes from Lou Vickery’s book, Reach Beyond: How to Jump Over Hurdles and Land on Success.

Peter Nondemand is the kind of person who makes many people feel uncomfortable. You see, he is always upbeat and positive. His optimistic thinking has led to optimistic outcomes.

Study after study shows optimistic people have more energy…make better decisions…are more productive…are less stressed…are happier…live healthier…and live longer than their pessimistic counterparts.

These describe Peter.

Even around the office, Peter is a noted encourager. He is rarely critical, focusing on cheering others to perform better. He makes every effort to demonstrate what it means to be a positive thinker and what it takes to maintain an optimistic mindset.

On April 11, 2004, Peter was put to a test. He was involved in a terrible automobile accident where three people lost their lives.

Many broken bones and severe internal bleeding threatened his life. As medics struggled to remove him from the wreckage, rather than lament, Peter encouraged them as they went about their duties.

Soon the ambulance was at the hospital. As the medics rushed him into the emergency room, still aware of his surroundings, Peter displayed his optimistic self.

But while the doctors attended to his wounds, Peter noticed a worried look on the face of one of the nurses. He suspected that his condition was not good…her look confirmed it.

Before he was put to sleep for life-saving surgery, these were Peter’s last words, “Treat me like I’m going to live, not die.”

Peter lived. And went forward with his life being his very optimistic self.

Note from Janet

Can we all be like Peter? Optimism is tough when, let’s be real, life stinks sometimes. How can we help but complain?

Sometimes we curse and, in our mind, and with our words, over and over again, repeat the negative details, being somewhat reckless with our tongue. But God says, “Reckless words pierce like a sword, but the tongue of the wise brings healing” (Proverbs 12:18).

Peter chose his own healing even before his accident by his ability to choose. He had the same choices you and I have—the choice to see the worst, or find the best. The choice to complain, or to comment on the good. The option to sink into the problem, or step into God’s promise.

Peter’s choice for optimism took him to see good things, making this verse come alive: “From the fruit of his lips a man is filled with good things as surely as the work of his hands rewards him” (Proverbs 12:19).

Peter chose life even before his accident. He chose to live with edifying words, thoughts and attitude. We can too because “The tongue has the power of life and death,” (Proverbs 18:21). We have the power to invite happiness or sadness.  A happy life is not one that’s filled with positive things, but one that’s empty of negativity.

Let’s Pray

Father, thank You for granting me the wisdom to choose words that edify, encourage and praise You in all circumstances. In Jesus’ name.

When facing adverse situations, what words come from your lips?

Janet

How God removes our insecurities.

Reblogged September 21, 2019

I sat in the passenger’s seat as my friend and I headed to the mall. “Freedom,” she said, “kids in school, finally a little peace.”

I knew what she meant. As a blind mom of three little active boys, my job changed during the fall. No more summer days sprinkled with, I’m-bored-Mom moments.

Had I made a difference?

Decades flew by and now looking back I wonder if there’s anything I had done in those days that made a difference, taught them something worthwhile or left memories in their hearts.

Looking at my sons, now with their own families, I asked, “Hey guys, do you remember the notes I used to tape to your pillows?”

“I think I might still have some of them, mom,” my oldest son said.

“I remember the notes you’d put in our lunch boxes,” my middle son said. “I almost ate one of them by accident.”

I grinned. But secretly, I hoped they erased memories of moments when their Mom wasn’t so nice. Sometimes, I threw my hands up in the air and, in utter frustration, I ordered. “Okay, the three of you, in your room, and don’t come out until you know how to behave.”

It was nothing extraordinary.

But even in those days of discipline, God prompted me to spend a few seconds jotting simple words on a piece of paper. I stuffed them in their lunch boxes or taped them to their pillow.

Nothing extraordinary in that gesture. Only a simple way for them to know they were loved no matter where they were.

Although my love was genuine, my job as a mom seemed overwhelming at times. I questioned my abilities, doubted my decisions and feared my inadequacies to do enough for them.

But in that season of my insecurities, God was busy watching, listening and with the pen of His love, He was writing notes to me. The note in Psalm 23 was written to carry me through my days.

God reminded me:

He was my shepherd, I lacked nothing to make me the Mom He wanted me to be.

As I sent my three little guys to school, God made me lie down in the green pastures of reassurance that they would be safe from all harm.

He led me beside the quiet waters of peace knowing His hand covered them. Drained after a long day of chores—of cooking, cleaning the kitchen, folding laundry and picking up toys, He restored my soul.

And when I wondered on the path of worry, He guided me in paths of righteousness for his name’s sake.

When tragedies, conflict and violence filled the news, the shadow of gloom came over me. But though I was tempted to walk in the shadow of worry, I declared I would fear no evil for God would be with me and my children. His rod and His staff would comfort me.

And while preparing meals for the family, God reminded me that He prepared a table before me in the presence of my enemies called worry, doubt, anxiety or guilt.

God anointed my sons’ heads with the oil of purity and faith; Their cup would overflow. Surely goodness and love would follow me and my children all the days of our lives and we would dwell in the house of the LORD forever.

God’s note left on the pillow of our hearts carries the truth of His Word, the strength of His promise, and the guarantee they will come to be.

Let’s Pray

Father, thank you for lifting from my heart feelings of guilt, insecurity and blame. I praise You for filling my days with peace, reassurance and trust in Your promises. In Jesus’ name, amen.

What are God’s notes telling you today?

Janet

Lord, I’m About to Faint

Feeling weak these days? We all do. We face those struggles. There’s so much on our plate, so much to resolve and so little strength to keep going.

I was there many times. And it began when in my freshman year of high school, while on that race track as I held the baton. But in my heart, I held anguish. Before me was the distance I’d have to run between the starting point and the next runner where I’d hand off the baton. In relay races, the distance is short. But for me, it ran the length of the world.

All eyes would be on me.

Dreadful thoughts would rumble like thunder—what if I should stumble, drop the baton, fall, or cause my team to lag far behind? All of these visions would torment me just before every race began.

Have you ever felt that way when one more stretch of life is before you and wonder if you’ll make it? All eyes are on you, observing your performance. Before you are on a journey, painfully foreign to you. Sweat pours out and you wonder if you’ll make it one more step.

That’s when God makes an announcement only for your ears to hear. “Let me run by your side!” And, with the firmness of His Word, He whispers confidence to begin the race. With His grace, He lifts your burden to lighten the load. With His promises, He cheers you on. Should you stumble with His mighty Hand, He’ll scoop you up. When anguish and pain sear and burn, His compassion will soothe calmness to your soul. And should fatigue run you dry; His grace will pour renewed hope. Should doubt flicker through, His lips will speak the reassurance to build your strength.

I wish I had known that…

I wish I’d known back then that, no matter how long the distance, how arduous the journey, how threatening the obstacles, my legs didn’t need to tremble. My heart didn’t need to race wildly. And I didn’t have to dread the races before me.

On the contrary, God was renewing my strength. He said, “Those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary; they will walk and not be faint” (Isaiah 40:31).

Here’s the catch. That promise is reserved for those who hope in the Lord. Victory comes, triumphant ending awaits, and the winning prize is ours. All that’s needed is to hope in Him, count on Him, and release the baton of our burdens to Him.

Do you think today is the day you’ll be handing God your baton?

Janet

When Hope is All You’ve Got

31 Aug

Walking by Faith, Not by Sight

Janet Perez Eckles

Reblogged August 31, 2019

“Good morning everyone,” the TV announcer said. “Let me correct that. There is nothing good about this morning of September 26, 2004.”

Trying to maintain composure, we tracked Charley’s path. At first, the action outside was not much different than the usual storms in Florida. But we knew that this was no ordinary storm. It was a preamble of a dangerous hurricane

“Everyone grab a pillow and a blanket,” I said. I made a mental note of the supplies we would need: a flashlight, water and our cell phones. Grabbing the small transistor radio with fresh batteries; a bit of reassurance trickled in while huddled in our confined shelter.

As expected, the lights went out. The TV was silenced. In the dark, the rage of the hurricane became more audible. As the wind howled, it whistled as if to announce, “I’ve arrived.” Its ominous nature intensified our vulnerability.

Charley had a vicious and unique personality. It was capricious. First, giving the impression it was headed in one direction and then at the last minute, changing directions. It had its own madness as it ripped through neighborhoods mercilessly.

“Hush!” I ordered. I turned the volume up on the transistor radio I held on my lap. “Listen!” I added with urgency.

Our family huddled, attempting to tune out the loud roaring outside. We hung on each word coming from the radio, the only device connecting us to the outside world: “It’s headed for Orlando, the winds here are unbelievable. With the last moments of daylight, we could see the roaring winds snapping trees in half like pretzel sticks. In other areas, the trees were yanked with force, their roots entangled in blocks of cement tossed aside like toys. Some static interrupted his description. Then he continued trying to catch his breath: “The huge glass windows of buildings nearby moved in and out in a swaying motion, attempting to resist the fierce wind with no success.”

“Lord,” I cried out in my thoughts, “guard our family.”

Then the serenity of my prayers was interrupted with more reports. I appeared calm on the outside, but with every sound outside and every detail of the report, I wondered if God was indeed listening. I questioned whether He’d answer before the worst happened. I doubted if my words were appropriate enough to reach Him. And I was certain that my emotions were blocking my pleas to Him. The more I tried, the more the hurricane of doubt thrashed in my heart.

“Now the road is in total darkness,” the reporter said. “Even some traffic lights are gone.”

Without air-conditioning, our cozy area turned into a small oven. But safety replaced comfort. Charley’s rage grew closer. The strong winds thrust sporadic bangs, rattling our garage door. The hurling debris against our front and back doors as well as those slamming against the large windows gave the same sensation as a “tic…tic…tic” of a bomb. We knew it would strike, but didn’t know exactly when, nor did we know which window would burst or what part of the roof it would yank away first.

No one spoke. But suddenly I heard a strange noise.

“What is that scraping?” I asked.

“It’s my yogurt cup,” my mom said in her characteristic calmness. “It’s my bedtime snack,” she added with a matter-of-fact tone.

How can she eat at a time like this? Does she not realize the danger we’re in?

“My hope is in the Lord,” she said, “He will protect us. Do you think this hurricane is catching Him by surprise? He is always faithful. Hope in Him is all we have.”

I had heard those same words from the pulpit. They brought mild reassurance as I sense no danger in that pew surrounded by painted glass windows.

But now what painted my mind was images of us under a rubble of destruction.

Outside noises emphasized my imagination. We heard more banging and crashing outside. I changed my please: “Lord, I know you’re in control. I have the certainty that You will see us through. And I know that You will calm this storm in my heart and also outside. But my words still echoed with doubt.

Charley’s furious winds struck with more intensity in some areas, yanking off roofs like box tops, and the roaring winds hurled traffic lights, smashing them to the ground. Some fatalities were reported.

“The tracking shows Charley is now in Orlando’s downtown area,” the radio reporter announced. We all went silent to make sure that we’d heard the good news (for us, at least) correctly, then it was confirmed. Charley had moved north; it had finally passed us.

God did show up timely and swiftly.

We breathed a sigh of relief. And I gave a silent, Thank you.

We stepped out of our stuffy room and headed outside, glancing with disbelief at the mess, the debris and broken pieces of items from tree branches to trashcan lids, to unidentifiable items.

While we all gasped at the destruction, a deep yawn slipped from my mom’s lips, and she tossed her empty yogurt cup in the wastebasket. “There was no need to worry then; no need to worry now. God is in control. Good night everyone,” she said.

“We wait in hope for the LORD; he is our help and our shield. In Him our hearts rejoice, for we trust in his holy name.” (Psalm 33:20)It was in the “waiting” that God worked in me—teaching me to trust in the midst of winds of fear. To be secure when I hear threatening sounds, and to rest secure when others blurt bad news, gloom, or warnings of destruction.

With renewed faith, gratitude removed the last of the dark clouds of the storm, and new meaning. My hope was in God, not in the circumstances or in those around me.

The next morning’s sun uncovered the radiance of God’s promises that He will answer our pleas, timely and swiftly. His faithfulness becomes visible not so much in the calmness of my life, but during the storms and emotional hurricanes that test my faith.

Let’s Pray

Father, as we face all storms that threaten our lives, we rest in the comfort of Your promises that You never abandon us, never leave us. But without fail, You shelter us with Your love and protection. In Jesus’ name I thank You. Amen.

What is testing your faith right now?

6 Ways to Deal With Failure

24 Aug

Walking by Faith, Not by Sight

“I actually cut my bangs myself,” my dear friend wrote.

I was impressed.

“…made a huge mistake,” she continued, “by cutting ¾ of an inch instead of ¼ of an inch.”

Yikes, that’s sounded like me.

“I couldn’t believe I did that!” she said, “But I’ve had more compliments than ever before. Turns out I look good in very short bangs and think I will keep them that way.”

See? Some friends are just blessed that way. They mess up and things still turn out well.

That was a lesson for me. In fact, it was a huge lesson because I learned many things about making mistakes, messing up things, failure in general, and making foolish decisions.

Have you been there lately?

If you’re in the “oops” phase of your journey and have looked in the mirror of life and find that you have messed up, then smile. Why? Because there are many lessons we can learn from dealing with failure. Here are six keys to dealing with failure. Using these keys can help you navigate through each episode toward a fail-proof path to success.

Remember:

  1. A lack of failure denotes we’re splashing in stagnant water.
  2. Failures bring added wisdom to help you take the next step.
  3. Failures are a sign we’re moving forward.
  4. Failures bathed in faith never equals defeat.
  5. Fear of failure comes when we let go God’s hand.
  6. Failure brings success when we trust in He who never fails us.

Paul tasted the sadness of failed plans, tough roads, cold prisons, failed relationships, but He never stopped. He held his head high, his convictions deep and his resolve certain: “I only know that in every city the Holy Spirit warns me that prison and hardships are facing me. However, I consider my life worth nothing to me, if only I may finish the race and complete the task the Lord Jesus has given me—the task of testifying to the gospel of God’s grace” (Acts 20:23-24).

Let’s Pray

Father, thank you that my failures are not the end, my mistakes are not the outcome, nor are my flaws my destiny. In you, all my failures are ways to humble me and change my focus—to see you, your hand at work and your mighty power that helps me finish the race. In the name of Jesus, I thank you. Amen.

What failure are you facing?
What does success mean to you?
What steps are you taking to move beyond failures?

Leaving the past behind

Walking by Faith, Not by Sight

“That’s him,” my friend said. “It has to be him.”

The soft evening breeze at SeaWorld made the concert delightful. The band’s catchy and familiar beat never got old, but the members of the 70’s band sure did.

“After all these years,” she said, “who knew he’d be still playing.”

“Did you try to go and say hi?” I asked, assuming that would be the first thing I would do.

“No,” she said, “although we were close friends. He belongs to the lifestyle I had during that time. And I don’t care to go back.”

Gulp. A bit of guilt slithered in. In a minute, I would have rushed to him and given him a big ole hug. And faster than a drum beat, I would’ve gushed an update of my life and asked about his.

But not my friend.

Her resolve to leave behind a life that wasn’t God-honoring was admirable. And choosing not to look back at time past where her life was empty was honorable.

She embraced the new streams of water in her new life. With no apologies, she danced to the melody of her new path. She relished in new friends. And her soul sang to God’s promise: “Forget the former things; do not dwell on the past. See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it? I am making a way in the desert and streams in the wasteland” (Isaiah 43:18-19).

Let’s Pray

Father, thank you for teaching me that I mustn’t go back to old ways. To ponder on past failures. To bring back old mistakes. I delight in the breeze of your promise that in the wasteland of bad memories, you’re creating a new spring of beautiful tomorrows. In Jesus’ name, amen.
