Breakfast Oops!

On the Porch

This morning I prepared scrambled eggs for our breakfast. I remembered that I had saved egg whites from the last batch of ice cream I made and never wanting to waste food, decided to add the whites to the eggs.

I took one bite, then another. Something wasn’t right!

I sniffed. It couldn’t be! Cautiously I asked my daughter, “do your eggs taste like pickles?”

“Yes, she said and I kind of like the taste. It gives the eggs some zing.”( I love this girl)

Being a wise man and fond of his food, my husband kept eating.

Thinking on how this happened, I remembered making ice cream and adding two egg whites to a half full, small round container in the fridge. I often used that size for egg whites.

I asked my daughter about that container. Turns out she was saving pickle juice and the official pickle jars were full.

She put some in the type of small round containers that I put egg whites in!

Mystery solved and the eggs weren’t bad!

Have you had a cooking oops? Share so I won’t feel that I am the only one.

Just getting around to answering a few emails. I thought this was funny, but I also gave thanks that it wasn’t the the ice cream that got the pickle taste. I hope I got that right.

I expect I’ve made mistakes but can’t recall one for now, but I remember an example of–too many cooks etc. When I was very young my mother and father took me on a visit to one of my mother’s friends for Sunday lunch–the full roast thing. Not all was well. Both my mother and her friend had added salt to the potatoes whilst boiling. The favourite part of my favourite meal had been ruined!

I’m pretty sure I could eat over salted potatoes. I love them and we had some form almost every supper. Have you ever heard of salt potatoes? Something about cooking the potatoes with heavily salted peel.

I thought it was a dash of lemon juice and was marveling at the creative addition. I did find it a refreshing change from plain old eggs and would consider adding the pickle juice again in the future. 😃

Didn’t happen to me, but my Grandmother. My dad loved coconut cream pie. Granny made one and gave him the first bite. Daddy was such a gentleman..he didn’t say a word. When Granny took her bite, she said: “MY WORD! WHO PUT THE SALT IN THE SUGAR BOWL???!!’ That pie went in the trash!

Oh that would be awful and yet your dad didn’t say anything. A true gentleman!
