I think there is magic in the quarters used for the Aldi grocery store carts. I wouldn’t say there is enough magic to bring about world peace, but for brief seconds in time, people in the parking lot stop and smile at each other.

What brings about this spontaneous camaraderie?  The simple exchange of a quarter as the departing shopper offers their cart to someone heading into the store. Sometimes no quarter is exchanged as people decide to pay it forward. In the current climate of anger, I enjoy these simple moments of kindness inspired with just one quarter.

    I don’t understand the quarter swap. Does the store refund a quarter if you return the cart? Does it take a quarter to “rent” the cart? Even though I don’t get the principle behind the quarters, I love this little story of kindness! Thank you for sharing.

      I was so into writing the feeling I forgot that important little fact. You “rent” the cart for a quarter by inserting it into the cart, which unlocks it from a chain. When you return the cart and re-chain it, the quarter is returned.

    I love being able to pass on my cart. It is a simple act of kindness that always makes people smile. We need more of those moments in our lives.
